Dec. 5. Mra. Mary It Walker, the old est remaining American xeliler ol Oregon died peaceltllly of old age at the home of her Ron, B. T. Walker in Koreat Urove Sunday, morning at II o'clock. Mr. Walker whoxe maiden name was Uichardaon waa mtrried to Klkanah Walker March 5, 1838, and Ihe aameday taried for Oregon. In a train of the American Fur Company they croaaed the plain, and after the uxual hardahipaof pioneer travel leached Waiilatpu, where they peiit the first winter. There, De-cenilx-r 7, 1 H38, waa horn their eldeat on, Cyrua Hamlin, the tirxt wl.ite nale child horn in Hie territory. Ho ia atill living on his farm near Albany. Willi lliexpring they went to their mission field at Walker's prairie, where they re mained teaching the Indiana until the new came of the Whitman maasacre in November, 1848, when they came to Kurt Colville for the winter. Thence, un der the protection of soldiers, they trav eled to the Willumetie valley and spent the winter at Oregon City. The following fall Mr. and Mrs. Walker bought of l'eter Hutch the dona tion claim where Forest Urove now ia, uiiil remained here to make it their home until their death. Mr. Walker waa ac tively concerned In building the Congre gational church, of which he waa pastor for nine yeara, and also in theestttlixh inentol l'ucillc University. He died No vember 21, 1877. Mrs. Walker's mind hud been clouded for several years past, but about a fortnight ago Iter reason re turned. Mr. and Mrs. Walker hud seven hods and one daughter, all married, six hav ing been born in the mission field and two in the Willamette valley and 25 grandchildren and six great-grandchil dren. The death of Mother Walker at Forest drove leaves Kev. J. S. (irillln of Hills boro, the earliest of the A met lean immi grants into Oregon. Mra. Walker came in 18)18; Mr. Grillin In IS.'ill. The land waa purchased by Noah Sturr from the school aupetintendent of Ben ton county in 18(10 for $10."0. Starr re mained in undisputed possession of the Iruct until 1SS2, when a flaw was dis covered in his title and a new deed was given him by the school land coin iris sionerx. Fifteen Years ago Starr died, and In his will the tract waa given to M. U. Starr, a son, who remained in posses sion until Thanksgiving day. While tlie family was at breakfast their attention was attracted to a houxe in tlio field erected on the premises during the night, and that William K. and Herman Shinn, were the occupants. Starr ordered the brother off, but they refused logo. Starr brought proceedings against them in tlie justice court and the verdict of the jury was that the Shinn's were the law ful owners of the land.
