Phtronize Our Home Industrigs 8 The prosperous community is the one that within itself, most supplies its own people in their various needs, and by selling much and buying little, keeps its money from going abroad, Our farmers and manufacturers would each havo a hotter morkot for their products, if our poople would encourago our local manufacturers by giving preference to their products over those imported from other places. Were such the practice, it would not bo long until Clackamas county would ba one of the groatost industrial contors on this Coast. ItFlt there are other industrial estab lishments in Clackamas county not given in this directory, their card will be inserted free of charge on receipt of copy. WILLAMETTE PULP & PAPER CO N. R. SAWTELL, firmvnr nn1 T)nnLr in Tnnualj Molalla, Oregon, jj WIDE TIRE BENEFITS. I They Not Only Improve tbe Road, but th Loutl la Si ore Knally Drawn. The beneficial effect of the wide tire on dirt roads is strikingly shown in some recent tests at the Missouri agri cultural experiment fetation at Colum bia. A clay road badly cut into rots by the narrow tires was selected for the test as presenting conditions least favorable to the broad tire. A number of tests of the draft of tbe narrow tire were made in these open rats and im mediately followed by the broad tires running in the same ruts. The first run of the broad tire over the narrow tire ruts was accompanied by an increased draft, the second by a draft materially less than tbe original narrow tire, the third by a still greuter decline, and in the fourth trip the rut was practically obliterated and filled. The narrow tires were then run over tbe same road, with the results that tbe draft was lighter than before the broad tires bad been used. Alternating the broad and narrow tires on this road for a number of times resulted la a gradually decreased draft In other words, the broad tires were Improving tbe road surface to such an extent when run but half the time as to make the draft considerably less for all vehiolos. This clearly demonstrates that if even half tbe wagons used on dirt roads had broad tires the results would be beneficial in draft and enormously benefloial in bettering the condition of the roads. In another trial, when a clay road Yii so badly cat into rata as to be al most Impassable for light vehicles and pleasure carriages, after running the 0 inch tires over this road 12 times tbe ruts were completley filled and a first class bicycle path made. A careful rec ord of tbe drafts shows thac tbe draft was materially less than with the nar row tires immediately before. Thus the road would have been gradually im proved by the use of tbe broad tin s at tbe same time that the farmer wccld have been able to transport bis products over the road with greatly reduced draft Steel Roadway. Secretary Wilson has given directions to General Roy Stoue, cbief of tbe bureau of good roads at tbe department of agriculture, to construct a sample steel roadway at the most convenient loca tion he can find at the Kashville expo sition, where it may be seen and studied by the visitors who will attend the ex position during the summer. Secretary Wilson thinks the steel trackway for wagons is the easiest solution of the good roads probk'm, particularly in tho west, where stone and gravel are scarce, and the soil is deep and sticky. Improved Road For MluiHlppL Mississippi now has a road law, which, if properly carried into effect, and if kept in effect for a material length of time, will probably give the state a system of public roads superior to any that it has ever had and perhaps superior to that of a majority of the southern states.
