Iieidle, who for the last two weeks has been conducting experiments in Southern Oregon to ascertain the value of the cement rock of that part of ttie state, returned to his home in Gladstone Tuesday of last week. He reports that he ha found the real Portland cement rock and is preparing samples to be subjected to government tests. Mr. Keidle is a cement expert and his authority is sufficient to state that a cement suitable for the use of builders can bo obtained ill Southern Oregon. If a good grade of cement c.in be made here in Oregon it will be the the mean of keeping tbouans of dollars within I ho state, for cement is one of the big items in our imports, 25,000 barrels being a low estimate that Oregon City alone has used in the last six years in the various construction work about the city. And a still greater quantity will be required in the next five years in building the bulkhead around the head of the falls, to be undertaken bv the Electric com pany, and in the erection of the factory buildings that are sure to be put up. The cement now used in Oregon comes from England or Belgium and to pay for it takes thousands of dollars in gold out of our Btate each year, while if it was manufactured nere the money would be kept at hnme with the further ad vantage of adding to our consuming population the men and families connec ted with the work.
