Durretle alsosHjke on this subiM't. lie condemned the prac tice of studying or "examining" foi ex aminations. Ile believed that this could te overcome by not giving notice of examination beforehand. "If pupils wera Ignorant of the fine for elimina tion until the hour of beginning, the written teats might prove a true slate inunt of knowloJge." Hev. Ktigg followed in discussion. He thought examinations were getting to be a (ad. lie doubled if they w ere of real buiictl t. lie believed the incidental re view was the only one of practical bene fit to either leather or pupil. 6iiMriiilendeut Armstrong, of Multno mah county, soke on "Interest " "There is no enterprise of any magni tude but has lo do with Interest iu tome form and teachers are generally con cerned about impressing on the minds of pupils the true principle ol computing Interest, that they may be qualified to do work which will iu all probability lie nnpiired of them in adult life. It is hot to he prcMimed that all or many people agree in their ideas on any euhjoct. I believe in reviews call them examina tions or any oliier name I believe in them, and I find it ImpoHaioleto procure indellib'H impressions without them, lie condemned a practice of condemning textbooks. Ile would not go out of his way to put stumbling blocks in Ins own way. The practice of picking flaws in text books is unfortunately qui'e com mon among teachers, especially young teachers. There are very few teachers who know enough to get along without text books. What is 'Interest?' It is an equivalent for the use of money. If yon hire a horse and buggy from a ti vet y stable, you pay so, much each for the iimu thereol. You must return the prop erty in as good good condition as it waa w hen you hired it, endthcdaily hire is for interest. If you go to a hanker and bite money (or a given time you muet return the money at the stated time and a certain amount of money for the hire, or the Interest, on that money. At first the teacher should select problems that are easy to understand that will come out even don't frighten them in ad vance. If mi pi Is (ail to understand in terest, it 1h generally the fault of the teachsr. Don't begin to talk about abort methods at an early stage of the proceedings that should come later on." He illustrated several problems in inter est, recommending the cancellation method. If pupils are allowed to make mistakes because they have not been warned of ditllciilties, the teacher, not the pupil, is to blame. Most things in niatlieu.at ics may be taught if t he teacher can manage himself. If he can t do that, then he has niiataken bin calling. Quuitions were asked by T. J. (Jary, K. M. Ward and M. L. Kngg. "Morals ami Manner" was the subject of an excellently writter paper by Miss Addie Clark. She spoke of the respon sibilities resting on the teacher, of the good work which ought to and may be dune in the school-room, and of the cer tainty that the most conscientious efforts of the teacher may meet with poor suc cess if the work is not supplemented at home. She urged earnest, whole-harted word. "Ltt us not be weary in well doing." l'arkplace was chosen as the next place of ineuting, to he held the lust Saturday in .March, and Prof. Gray, Miss Bracken and W. W. Austin were asked to pre pare a suitable program for the occasion . The association then adjourned to the upper story, where a delicious luncheon, tunic fully spread on three lung tables, awaited discussion. AKTKKNOON SESSION. Called to order at 2 p. m. by Supt. Ann strung The superintendent is required by law to visit the different schools and as a general rule he visits the teacher in a friendly eplril and not with a desire to find fault The ill most confidence should prevail between the superinten dent and the teacher, If he finds a teacher who cannot he endorsed at all, lie should ascertain the length of the term fur which that teacher is employed and when that lime expires he should recommend that anoi her teacher be hired. Hchools are mainialnd, not to give em ployment lo a deserving person, but for the benefit of the school children. The children's best Interest should be con sidered first of all The Huieriiiten dent's talk was listened to with close at tention by all present. Heveral cute recitations bv very small pupils of the school were a pleasing fea ture of ihmlay's entertainment. Miss llarriette Doton read a very in structive aH-r on "History and Litera ture." Her ideas were g'xnl and her words can-fully chosen. Prof. C. W. Durretlo siwke on "The Teacher's Preparation." "There are certain attributes of hand, of heart, of brain, which a person must possess in order to ever become a successful teacher. If the teacher possesses personal mag netism in a marked degree is eminently fitted for the wot k of a teacher, if pre pared in other lines. The teacher who does not honestly care for the welfare ol his pupils cannot be a really successful teacher. A broad and thorough cultiva tion of the mind is very essential to suc cessful leaching. A teacher who does not read and keep informed of what the world ia doing, should not be allowed to receive a certificate, even when passing a creditable examination. A dwarf may find Ida field of observation vastly widened when he gates on the world from the shoulders of a giant. We may gate on the great field of culture and the best in educational development from the shoulders of such intellectual giants as Page, and White, and Baldwin and Gregory The following resolution waa offered by Mrs. II. 8. Uibson and unanimously adopted : "On behalf of the Teacher's Association of Clackamas county, I de sire to offer a resolution of thanks to the people of Willamette Falls for the kind treatment and lavish hospitality shown us to-day.
