A party was given Eva Mattoon last Tues day evening, the occasion being the 10th aniversary of her birth. Quite a number ot her young friends were present. The even ing was pleasantly spent with music and games. All enjoyed themselves hiighely until a late hour. The hay crop is good in this vicinity, the potato crop will be light. The oat crop will aUo be very light, while spring wheat will yield a fair average. Hops are not looking so well as they did last year, and as there seems to be no price for them, growers are corresiondingly discouraged. All kinds of business is very much de pressed at the present time, ami the only way I see out of it is to elect McKlnley, and stand firm for sound money, moderate j and eimal protection, and prosperity will surely follow. Our Sunday school is in a prosperous and nourishing condition. At an election held recently lor the selection of ollicers for the ensuing year, our present ethcient super intendent Daniel Robertson was elected for the third time, Mrs. Khode Lee was selected as assistant superintendent, Miss Ida Stark weather secretary, M. Oallitld treasurer.and Joseph Stephes librarian. Rev. Mr. Powell preaches for us on the second and fourth Sundays, and Kev. Mr. Wright and Sellwood bold services orcas iouly, so we are well supplied with religious services. As ours is a union school all denominat- ments will be served. Proceeds from the sale Of refresh men ts will be given to the preacher. There w ill be a grand picnic at Viola Park, Auaust 25, to which every body is invited. The Teachers Association of tliiscounty will hold their regular monthly meeting here at the above date. Church and Sunday School will hold a donation sociable in the church building Friday evening, August 21, for the benefit of the pastor. A good literary program is in preparation. j Yesterday quite a number of Cams iters visited the New Soda Springs, recently (lis- . covered on the farm belonging to Huris opposite E. C. Maddock s place. It is pleasantly erected and may develop into a popular summer resort. Mr. Hay hurst has moved from the old parsonage building on the southwest corner of his farm to the location formerly occu pied by E. C. Maddock, was commonly known, Father Wbitlock. He has partly rebuilt and entirely remodeled the old dwelling bouse, finishing it neatly inside Willi fresh paint and paper. In snite of hard times, many improve ment are going on and about this vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Hardesty, of Eastern Ore gon, are visiting friends and relatives here about. Call. Cakus, Aug. 8. The rain has hindered harvest and perhaps spoiled or at least in jured the grain. But it has assured a fair potato crop and proved agreeable in many respects. Six wagons passed Carus Corners last Monday enroute for the Eagle Creek coun try. Mrs. O'Niel left here only a short whilo ago, Mr. Holmes has not been a resident of this place for some time. He is, however, re memtiered hy many, who feel, regardless of personal political views, that Mr. Cleveland is a man of keen perception when il is a matter of appointments.
