Tl: Indian wa accoiupiinied by bis aged
niiaw, who delivered herself of an exit-la-runt
giggle at tho obi man' npnech,
probably at the idea of being nb'n to any
nhe hud Journeyed clear from the Fraaer
river, in I'.ritinh Columbia, to repuy a
vinit made undoubtedly 10 year ago.
They were both typical representa
tive of the tribe inhabiting the III it lib
Columbia count, and Rlretcblng north
into the Inland of the Alexander Archi
pelago. The old man wore the cotton
hirt, overall and moccasin of the
coHl Indian, around hi shoulder being
throw n the invariable red blanket. The
woman wa attired in highly figured
calioo gown, her head being covered
with a red bandana handkerchief. In
stead of nioccanliil her feet were incased
in the copper-riveted nhoen to dear to
the heart of a klulehmuii. Iletween the
two rented a red, flower-painted bran
nail-atudded lx, hardly to he named a
trunk, which likely contained their en
tire worldly HjHeniou, barring the ca
noe and cabin they hail left on the
shore of the turbid Franer.
"How long have you ben in getting
here?" wa anked.
"Mux tatluin nun," responded the si
wash, hi wrinkled face expanding tuto
a smile, a though a SO-duy trip through
an entirely strange country was but one
of other pleasant experiences in Ilia life,
"And are you certain of finding your
friend in Oregon City?" queried the re
Kjrter, the conversation being held in
the Chinook jurgon.
"I don't know," replied the Indian.
"He and hi squaw stopped with tin
some tun yearn ago and they anked u to
come and see them on the river by the
big 'Tumwater.' "
"Hut the 'tumwater' i in the Colum
bia river, near The Dalles."
"Yen, hut that is not the 'falling ttun
water ;'" and hi nquaw spoke of "the
big cily below on the river."
"Nawitka " broke in the withered old
klntchman, a though proud of U-ing
able to add to the information, "yaka
wawa nika kawkwa," and nhe giggled
again a nhe tho'ight of the description
given her by I lib Oregon City of the Wil
lamette klutcbman panned through her
mind.
"Suppone, however, your friend ban
moved to some other country at some
time during all these yearn?"
"Oh, well, I niipinine we'll go homo
again. We're waiting for the nteam
Inwit to come in now and ."
At tint moment a little girl dropx'd a
hag of H-ni ben from the window of
'swiftly moving electric car, panning on
the bridge, and the conversation was
I ended, both squaw and buck making a
dive into tho middle of the bridge to re-
cover the bruised and dusty fruit rolling
about. Portland Telegram.
J. K. (iroom, a former resident of this
city, but now of Portland, returned
home Inst Monday from an extended
trip to Illinois and Iowa, where be went
in the Interest of tho Willamette Land
Company of thi city. Mr. Groom states
that business was fairly good in the East
and showing some sign of reviving, but
immediately following the democratic
convention and the big howl for free sil
ver, a feeling of uncertainty and distrust
came over the business community with
the result that time are getting harder
than ever. Mr. Oroom thinks that Mc
Kinley will carry Illinois and Iowa by
big majorities.
Among the callers Thursday at the
Entkhi-rikk ollice was Kit-hard Morton

In regard to the fight, the Kntkhtkihk is

The season for salmon fishing closes
August 10th, and woe to the unfortunate
fisherman who is caught in the act of
hauling the festive Chinook out of the
water after that date. Only a few days
ago there was an unprecedented run of
salmon In the Columbia, but they came
late, probably on account of tho unusual
high water during the past season.
A party composed of Harry Sloper,
Mrs. Sloper, Miss Clara Adam and
Chester Caufield, returned this week
from a yucation trip to Pine Creek. All
enjoyed themselves yerv much, re
