Lest you should think your correspondent is asleep or gone abroad, 'we will, with the editor's kind con sent, endeavor to enlighten our friends throughout the surrounding country places a little concerning our pleasant community. During the past year several changes have taken place. Dr. Richard Partlow and family are oc cupying the Waldron house. Dr. Partlow was formerly well known professionally in the city, but has been away for some years practicing at Baker City, Idaho. Mr. McCauslands have added buildings to the Wier plxce where they now live, Mr. Wier having moved on the Cbas. Shields place. Mr. Myers's brother, Mr. Smith, wbo came from Klamath county last fall, is eo eupying the Brooks house . Mr. and Mrs. Titus and little daughter Ethel have moved into the country leaving the Kellogg bouse vacant. Mr. Kellogg, however, expects tenants soon. Mr. Kelland is making many improve ments on bis farm, formerly the Burt place. Mr. Sumner is building a neat cottage on the plat known as South Oregon City, which augurs well for the prosperity of that old time survey. Other dwellings are yet to be finished. Mr. McKillicain, who has been employed In the mills, is now at home attending to the work upon his place. Brnj. Hendrickson is hauling wood and keeping bis place in its usual nice style. Considerable wood has been cut on the places of W. H. Burghardt, Arthur War ner, J. 0. McCord and Mr. Graham. Everything is flourishing at the Maple wood gardens. Mr Andrews expects to anpplr his customers with the choicest of vegetables. Arbor Day was duly observed and the school grounds were prospectively adorned by the planting of a maple surnamed Long fellow. The grounds are still open to the common, which greatly retards the best re sults. Mr. Perry as been sick. Mrs. M. L. Moore has also been Indisposed. Miss Johns, of Danville, Illinois, who has been visiting ber sister, Mrs Richard Part low, has returned to her home. Elliott Prairie News. Elliott V haiku, June 1. Farmers have been working early and late the past week to get their grain sown. Some are done and others will finish this week. All kinds of grain and vegetables have made rapid growth the past week. . Quite a large crowd was present at the Congregational meeting held at Shuck's mill a week ago last Sunday. Services were held at 11 and 2 o'clock, after which the congregation proceeded to Butte creek near by, and several members were baptized by Rev. Dick. Mrs. Jennie Blair, of Silverton, was visit ing on the prairie last week. L. A. Coldren, of Eugene, Lane county, came down to attend the funeral of his brother last Saturday, and is now visiting relatives In this vicinity. Marsh Rarnsby, of Silverton, was a caller on the prairie last Sunday. Eph Ramsby and family, of Barlow, were visiting relatives here last Sunday. Mlas Eva Todd, of this place, has gone to 1 1 waco, Washington, to spend the sum mer with the family of Jack Denton. Runaways seem to have been the order of the day the past week in this part. Last Monday Mr. Broadwell's team got tired ol ttanding and took a spin down the roai, and after running about two and a half ,..ii. , .i,.,i hv Fr,,k r.,.,r,. v i damage done. A. B. Brown's team ran away at Shuck's mill last week, causing the owner to spend a few dollars for repairs. Henry Hi.yes's team ran away last Sun day and demolished bis buggy. On Thursday last while driving along the road Charles Coldren's team became fright ened at a piece of paper which was lying in the road and ran away, broke the hack considerably, and caused Charlie to do the double somersault act backwards. G. W. Killin'i team became somewhat .fractious tbe other day and started through the orchard villi the hack, but did not go far till they got loose when they seemed to be sa!intlrd and stopped Slight damage to hack was all IU sti.ih. Currinsvill .tews. Cl'RRiKsvii.Li. The line weather seems to have come to stay with us while alter such a prolonged rainy season. Seeding has been muchdelayed especially on these bottom farms. Most of the larai ers, however, are nearly through seeding by this time. Not a great deal of fruit la expected in this vicinity this year, as it is thought a greater portion of It is killed. Politics is getting lively around here, and we suppose they will reach the climax to day. Saturday A. S. Dresser and T. r. Griffith spoke to a full house at Garfield From the attention given, and ths responses of the audience to the speeches, we should judge that the speakers gave voice to the sentiments of the people ol that vicinity. Mr. Dresser talked on the money question flat money-and Try aptly Illustrated how that anything passing as a medium of exchange must have value. We think that he convinced the majority of the voters that his logic was sound. A few more days will dispel sll doubts. Road work commenced here last week under H. F. Currtn as road boss. Some new grades will be made between here and Eagle Creek. G. J. Currinhas moved bis stock of goods back to Currinsville and will sell out at cost. Today a circular has been thrown into our yard announcing that a great circus is coming to Oregon City, June 11th. I -ess than a year ago there was a similar an nouncement What was the result? 11 us not forget. Such concern! are managed by shrewd, unprincipled men. Their em ployes are a low class. They are always attended by a gang of swindlers, and take I away large quantities of money, giving In j return a few hours amusement, which only demoralizes our people Instead of elevating 1 them. It is a grievous fact that our middle I aged as well at young people patronise such concerns. The example and intluence ol such things are ol greater Importance than the majority of fathers and mothers real ize. I want to spiral to them one and all, especially those who have not been think ing. That they must think, and thinking then act, the moral condition of our coun try demands. Each mother, as well as fa ther, must take a stand for the right if she has the welfare of our people at heart. The circus comes in with a grand flourish, giv ing complimentary tickets to our county and city officers to induce them to be deaf, dumb and blind . The officers in turn hand out the tickets to children and people to buy popularity and votes to secure their next election. When the circus visited us last year, men who were fathers and sup posed to be gentlemen, stood as capers at the gaming tables, helping to bring their fellow men down to degradation. Oh. 1 Hu. manlty, where art thou? What blindness? Voters ol our country fathers and mothers let us thlnkl Think to a purpose; think to better the condition of our people. Glbankr. Salmon Items.
