He lived in 'that state and iu Canada uniil he was 45 years old; then moved to New York, where he stayed until 1804, when he moved to Iowa. He came to Oregon from Iowa seventeen y?ar ago. He was married lo bis second wife, Mr. Hannah Briggs, in l&i'J. Two sons sur vivs him William, by bis second wife, and Joseph Briggs, his step-eon, Mr. McCauslin was buried atCanby last Sat urday. Rev. McLaughlan conducted the burial services. C. II. Foster ba been riding for Sher iff Maddock for the laet two weeks. R. B. Doughty ba been selling some oats to Joaepb Cshill for 20 cents per bu-Lel and delivering them. Mike Uuiraa is busy sacking potatoes to ship to San r rancisco. Max Baumann ba gone down on the Columbia to work in a logging camp this summer. R. B. Doughty has been hauling lum ber from O'Conner's saw mill to Oregon City. He says the roads are so bad the horses have to pull while going down bill. A surprise party was given at Wolf gang Bowman's last Saturday evening. Your correspondent was not present. Wsrnsr Grange held its regular meet ing last Saturday at the Grange hall in New Era. A large crowd attended and a good time was bad. Miss E. B. Batten is painting a large scenery picture which he will soon place upon the market for sale. The next meeting of the New Era re publican club will be held at Brown's school house on Saturday evening, May 9. Crescent News. Crbsckst, May 4 The present rainy weather affords the serene as well as the dissatisfied good cause for complain ing. It is especially hard on the gar dens, and makes all kinds of out-door work disagreeable. Country roads are In a dreadful condition, and only dry weather can improve them. George Stevens and bride have moved to this neeghborhood. We bid them welcome, wishing them Ions life and prosperity. Mr. Keliy, who has been sick so long, was move, a week ago to Oregon City where she cm be nearer her physician and receive more careful treatment. Our Sunday school had an attendance of twenty-five last Sunday, which is encouraging. Miss Viola Adkins, of Canby, is visit ing with the family of her sister, Mrs. George Waldron, of this place. J. Barreth, our late hog dealer, had a sale last week, selling household goods and personal property. Seemingly there was an intention of breaking up the fam ily. How It will all end we cannot say. Mrs. Albert Kraeft, of this neighbor hood, started last Monday for California. Mr. Kraeft will follow next fall. Sorry to see our neighbors go. We wish them prosperity. The populist club of this place have been entertaining the people with speak ing and debating, and with an occasional song or recitation. The subject of lost debate was. Resolved, That the populist party would do more good for the United States than the republican party has done. The negative won. . .7:30. Ihis is suit brought by Raxsby, Mrs. M. F. Brogan to recover 120,000 Chairman. damages for injuries received last fall, while driving over the connty road be tween Canby and Barlow, at which time one of the horses stepped on a loose plank wbicb flew upward canning the horses to scare and run away and she received serious injuries. A claim for this amount was presented lo the county court, but after due consideration was disallowed. Ex-Governor W. W. Thayer, Newton McCoy and Glen 0. Uolman are attorney for plaintiff, and W. X. There will be an inte'esting legal con test over this case, as the question of tbe extent of liability incurred by a county court as to safe condition of county roads will be taken into consideration.
