TEMPERANCE.
Whehkas, It seemi best to have a
universal day for temperance Sunday
school work and where as the 4th Sun
day of November ha been chosen by a
great manv leading Sunday school work
ers. Therefore be it
Resolved, That we encourage this
movement, and further that we adopt
that day for especial temperance work.
The excellent plan of having a Sunday
school pledge placed on the Sunday
school room has been suggested, we
wottid recommend the adoption of this
plan as suggested by Mrs Addison.
A vote of thanks was then given the
good people of Milwaukee for their
hospitality in entertaining us so royally.
Rev. S. W. Stbvkeb,
Mas. W. A. Wihtb,
Rev. H. E. Hobnschlh.
Mrs. A. M. Porter,
Mrs. C. F. Clark,
Committee on Resolutions.
A collection was then taken up which
when placed with the one taken earlier
in the day amounted to $0.75 which
would nearly pay all the present indebt
edness of the County Sunday School
association. The new president said he Mr S f.awrence,
visitors considerably.
Sunday, a day ol revival services. At
10 oVIctvk a. in. song service was led by
lico. Howard of Oregon Cilv. All who
.know Mr. Howard will readily ami cor
rectly guess that a real rovival was the
result of this half hour ol song.
! At 10:30 there was preaching service
j by Rev. W. U. Holt of Woodstock, was
jto hare officiated but not being present
j Rev. C. R. Shields, I'resbyterian mission
ary preached the morning service, taking
for his text Isiah Ik), latter part of 15th
verse, "the Lord will surely deliver us;
this city shall not be. delivered into the
hands of Assyria." He preached an able
sermon, emphasizing the power of God
to deliver this world out of the hand of
Satin.
At 3 o'clock p. m. the convention again
assembled and was led in a song and
testimony service by J. K. Urootu, in
the absence of Ed Maple of Oregon City,
who was to have led, according to pro
gram. This service closed by singing
the hymn "Blessed Assurance."
At 3. -ISO there was preaching service
by Rev. M. M. Lewis of the Seeoud
Baptist church of East Portland. His
text was Eph. 6:4, "and ye fathers pro
voke not your children to wrath, but
bring them up in the uurture am ad
monition of the Lord" He said "as the
twig is the bow," consequently parents
could not begin training their children in
the religion of Jesus Christ too early in
life. All of our great men, said Mr.
Lewis have been taujit to love the
Lord at home, at their mother's knee,
and not thrown wholly upon the Sabbath
school or upon the pastor. While he
spoke very heartily in favor of the Sab
bath school as a spiritual educator for
children, he said the great bulk of the
work devolved upon the parents Sunday
evening.
At 7 o'clock meeting was again assem
bled and was led in a song service by
A. F. Parker, of Oregon City. After
singing several selections, Mrs. J. G.
Wilson led in prayer.
At 7:30 gospel ser ices were ooned by
singing "Showers of Blessing"aud Rev.
Mauer led in prsyer.
Kev. J . Ueir of Oregon City was to
have preached, but not being present,
Kev. .Mauer read the lesson and Mr,
Sellwood preached.
The meeting closed with short testi
montals ana thus closed ono of the most
inspiring Sunday school conventions
that has been held in Clackamas county.
