Information liitarratlng to Moth Crvaui trj Men and Milk I'rtHlurar. Will nni of your contributor ciillvliton tnc on tliaixiloivt of milk 'rl'"' Uur many town ought on to have to make a ncarator protltablor la the butter W-tti-r tlan Uiat uiaJo In tin' old fashioned way if mir care ! "' We now have, ot our dniry school for the use of students studying farm dairy ing five kinds of hand scimratora, any ; one of which is u (mod machine and dins its work satisfactorily. Wo have Uvn 500 using one separator a couple of years, ! running it wt of the time with a Jersey i bull on a two horse trvad power. The bull soon grew to hko tho work, if we ; may judgo from his actions. It was eer 1 1 j i uly a rvlirf from standing idle nil tho I time. Ho was especially delighted with 3' ' the pail of warm skimmilk which the dairyman gave him to drink at the close I of the skimming. Our IVLaval Baby Separator Xo. 3 runs perfectly smooth and even with tread power. It runs easily by baud and it is not considered hard work to skim the milk of 10 or 13 cows. First of all, get a pair of scale. One of the better class of spring balances costing fl will do. Weigh the milk of each cow as often as ouco a week, re cording the same, so as to calculate the yield of a cow for a year. Next get a Babcock milk test A four bottle ma chine is large enough and will cost about Use tho test first of all to seo how closely yon are removing; the fat from the milk by your present system. Ana lyze the full milk as it goes into the pans or cans and then the skimmilk after the cream has been removed. Mr. Morrison has been nsing the Dab- cock test in onr farmers' institutes this i winter, testing the full milk, skimmilk ! and buttermilk brought in by farmers to j the institutes. In a great many caes ! the skimmilk showed 1 ht cent fat left in the milk, while the full milk showed j about 4 per cent fat that is, these so called dairymen were losing 25 per ceut ' of all of the fat in their milk. These fanners had raised tho feed, fed it to the ' cows, milked them and carried the milk . to the house, where, because of imjirojier handling, 2" per cent of the fat was lost. What business but farming can stand ; such waste? , As is said ubove, nse the Babcock test i and see how close you ure recovering the 1 fat by your present system. If yon are i losing over two-tenths of 1 per cent fat . in your skimmilk by the present system ' and cannot improve tiion it, you should j begin ut once to seek some other system : of raising or separating cream. With : the baud separators carefully run you i I need nut lose over one or two-tenths of 1 j j per cent fat. the latter being the extreme j ! UUUt. j Last year a fanner living near Fond dn Lac, Wis., followed just the plan I have laid down aud soon discovered that he was wasting a great deal of fat. Ho then took a hand separator on trial aud in a month r turned, saying he was ready to pay for it; that he was milkiug s cows an'1 tbe h:uld 'Parator was fwiv. ing two pounds of butter a day over the I old system; that thette two pounds of butter saved were equal to having two ; more cows in bis herd, and since bo did not have to feed, milk or care for these i two he was well satisfied to pay the price of the separator. How can a farmer who is taking care of cows for money and not for fun af ford to go along blindly, not knowing I where he is losing the fat which has cost j so much to make, when for pi and a Lit- tie intelligent study be can learn just where the wastes are and be in position to check them? If our inquirer will put the scales in his barn, get tbe Babcock test and then the hand separator if he finds it neces sary, as he probably will, I will guaran tee that he would not take $100 at the end of one year and go back to his old practice of working in the dark, as be is now doing. Professor Henry in Breed er's Gazette. An Example lor American Glrle.
