occasion was the address of Attorney
J. E. Hedges, the clerk of the Canemah
distrsct. His address was very instruct
ive und interesting, and dealt chiefly
with facts concerning school days at
Yule colleg-J. The Canemah schoil is
under the management of I'rof. E. C.
Haekrttt, principil, and Mise Sade Chose,
teacher of the primary department, who
are doing excellent work. They held
the same positions last year, and the
school is prospering under their man
agement. The Y. M. 0. A. fair at the old Meth
odist church (lsBt Monday night, was a
decided success considering the f ict
that thero welre numerous a'traetions in
the city on iliat night. The affair was
under the management of Mrs. B. S.
Uellomy, Mrs. Nathan Tinkle and Mrs.

about $10. This makes a substantial
beginning toward the establishment of a
gymnasium .
William Murray, a cook by profession,
and more recently a tourist bv occupa
tion, was arraigned before Justice Dixon
last Saturday on a charge of stealing a
valise and its contents from the Port
land Hotel, tho property of Leroy I-e I

tel testified Hut they saw Murray t ike
the valise; hence conviction w is an eisy
matter. He was sentenced to 00 days
confinement in the county jail.
