So many changes are necessary, however, that it is sometimes difficult to give their dresses variety in style and still hold to the cast iron rule of simplicity which is tho secret of their success. Numbered with other styles described in the New York Sun are blouse waists which are made long enough so that the fullness overhangs tho belt and are very popular this season, and so becoming too. . A pretty gown for a dressy one is mode of yellow crepou, with two nar row ruflles edged with yellow ribbon around the skirt. The belt, basque, rev ere, cuffs and collar are of yellow silk, and lace insertion trims tho revers. Another dainty littlo dross of white india silk hits a similar blouse effect, with a yellow crepe do chino vest and TWO NEW SUITS. - a neckband and sash of yellow satin rib- bon. Lace forms the lower sleeve, the wido collar and extends down each side of tho full vest An attractive little model for a sim ple wool gown has the same blouse effect around tho waist, and a plain pointed yoke, finished with full revers, which extend over the sleeves. Rows of : fancy wool braid of different widths ' make the trimming. Yoke waists are always in style and so pretty it is hard ly possible to go amiss in the use of this style, especially for wash dresses. Ginghams, trimmed with the new open work embroidery, are very pretty when made this way. Tho small boy is rather an attractive object in a quaint little sailor costume, which makes him appear older than he really is. The blouse may be of silk, linen or cambric, but the trousers mui-t be long, to give him the proper opinion of his own size. Covert coating in gray or drab is much nsed for two piece suits for boys. These suits consist of a little coat or jacket, worn over a shirt waist, and knee trousers. A Point For Careleaa I'lajem. Careloss players often strike octaves with tho left hand where singlo bass notes are written. These single notes are purposely written by the author to obtain a bell-like sound and a more delicate foundation tone for the harmonic super structure, and the coarser octave is out of place in such cast. Franz Liszt has a particular dislike for this habit. An other and worse practice is tho striking of other notes with an octave in the left, a handful of notes, as it were, resem bling a grant Hounehold Hint. Lemon juice und salt will remove iron rust If the drawers of your safe or bureau novo out and in with difficulty, rub oap over their edges. Use granite ware for cooking vege table and fruit In the soaking water for clothes use a little turpentine. Soak a greasy frying pan in ammonia and water. Eggs boiled in the shell two minutes, or put in cold water and brought to a boil, then eaten with crumbed soda crackers, are excellent for breakfast A box of powdered borax' should al ways bo kept on the sink shelf. A little added to the water in which dish towels are washed will help much to keep them clean and at the same time keep one's hHiids soft and smooth. Children are fond of tarts made of splitting fresh milk crackers and filling with a liberal supply of jelly. Such tarta are nice for picnio lunches. , . CrtlLlW'EX'S SUMMER FASHIONS. A few ure in the close titling sliai, pointed iu front, With a tru parent lace butterfly or u substantial bow set up at the back of it The choice in materials is exception ally large, Mid there never was a time when more beautiful coloring or delicacy of texture could bo found. Silk, orepon, laeo and ehilTon are the ruling element of the present styles. The fancy fot bodices of a material and color in strong contrast to tho sleeves and skirt is tui old one, which continues to increase iu popularity, und lace and chilfou uro em ployed for this purpose quite as much as when the stylo was new. For traveling dresses the durable cov ert coating hits almost superseded the blue serge. This fabric is mostly seen in the light beige, tan and fawn colors, and occasionally in light green or gray ish blue. Tho useful tan shades aro not always becoming, but tho brunette who finds them unsuited to her complexion can improve them by adding a vest of A CHARMING MfSLIX GOWN. warm red basket cloth or of palo yellow pique, while a blond can choose a vest of light blue twill with white dots, line or crossbars. The coat and skirt invariably iu such gowns aro severely plain if made, in good taste. The skirt, escaping the floor all around, is uutrimnied except by stitching above a hem and is usually without lining, though occasionally lined with gay taffeta silk the color ot the vest or matching that of a shirt waist to bo worn by way of variety. Tho coat may be long or short as one fancies and eithi r single breasted or else lapped at the waist line to fasten by ono or two buttons. Tho revers and collar aro masculine in cut. A charming summer dress for a young lady is made in white muslin, with pink stripe and dot. Both lxxlico and skirt are finished with a frill of net. The bodice is made of white silk, with pink satin collar, waistband and sleeve lxiws. Tho hat is in white leghorn and is trimmed with white tips, tho brim caught up at the side of back with plaited ribbon rosette and full of whito laeo. , Tambourine Ittittle. Tho "tambourine" rattle is a recent addition to nnrsery equipments. This is a simplo bauble to make. For its foun dation you require a small wooden em broidery hoop. For this is made a cir cular cover of chamois or silk, which ever you prefer, to lie slipped over tho hoop and tightly stretched. Then tho edge is bound all around with bright ribbon, and about an inch apart tiny loops of narrow riblmn are sewed, each ono tipped with a little silver bell. This musical jingler is sure to delight its youthful owner. An Attractive Toilet. A charming toilet, depicted in the New York Herald, was made in surah delaine and trimmed with epaulets in doublo japan silk and bows and floating streamers of moire ribbon, the throat baud and waistband being in keeping. BECOMING KAT AND COW'S. The large collar is of point Venetian lace. Tho hat, of striped straw, recalls the two shades of the -s and is adorned with bunches ot and an upstanding ostrich feather. The van dyked brim is fancifully tun.ed up in front orescentwise, while at the biiie rises as a shell agi'ist the moire paling ifl TTr'i .IT TAR a' l a TWO USEFUL APPLIANCES. The braces in the gates were made to reach from ono cor ner to tho other. Not long after the ends of the gates were dragging iu the mud. I learned from a friend how to easily remedy tho trouble. Place the diagonal strip rs shown In the cut, mora lising it into the upper piece about one foot from the end. Of course the gate will sag a little, but not nearly so bad as when made tho old way. The second appliance is a barn door catch fastener. I resolved that our stable door had been smashed to pieces by tho wind for the last time, so I put my wits to work and devised the following: A is the spring, made of tough hickory, 10 Inches long, 'J inches wide and one-qiuir- ter inch thick. D is tho block, 5 inches long, 3 inches wido Hiid 3 inches thick. The two parts are attached together by I screws or staples. Wo have had no broken doors since using this catch fastener. Choice of Egg For Setting. Novices often make mistakes in choos ing eggs for incubation which a littlo ex perience will correct. In the first place, It has been proved again and again to be Impossible to decide from tho appear ance or shape of an egg whether it will produce a male or female chicken, so an attempt to select a setting of eggs that will produce only pullets is lest not made. Again, it is utter foolishness to Imagine that a largo egg will produce a fine chickeu, or that a pullet hatched out of a large egg is bound on that account to lie a layer of large eggs. Theso and all other absurd ideas should le aban doned and common senso employed, ffhich will result in the choice of a nice setting of medium sized, sound shelled eggs of the normal Bhape, according to The Feathered World, which says: Now, when a hen is alHjut in the mid dle of her luy, the eggs are most likely to be fertilo, and the chances, too, are in favor of chickens hatched from them be ing vigorous; at the same time these eggs are of the most natural shape usu ally. And so if we select from a quan tity of eggs those which are most ordi nary in shape we shall, iu all probabil ity, have a good hatch, and all tho chicks will be strong. One other point is worth remembering. Let all tho eggs, if pos sible, be the same age. If set fresh, tiie chickens will hat':h out often in 19 days, but if the setting contains a mixed lot of eggs, some a day old, somo perhaps a week or 10 days, tho chickens will come out straggling one at a time perhaps for three days, catiaing a lot more extra trouble tbun if they hutched out to gether. Free Instruction In Agriculture. Never before have there been so many nor so carefully arranged short courses In agriculture offered by our agricultur al colleges as now. Many young men will attend these courses and bo greatly profited. Among western states sacu courses are being given during the present win ter by the agricultural colleges in Illi nois! Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minne sota, Nebraska and Wisconsin. These courses differ in details. Some are spe cially devoted to dairying, others to live stock in general, while others will give Instruction in a still wider range of sub jects. There are either no fees or such (mall ones as not to be a burden. Aside from the lectures and other clans work, those attending will have the great ad vantage of access to large agricultural libraries, museums and laboratories. One Way to Winter Cabbage. Tho following method, according to The American Agriculturist, has been practiced successfully by farmers in Mis souri: An ordinary salt barrel is secured, and after one end has been removed it is buried in the earth. The cabbage is then gathered and partly dressed, ready to be brought to the kitchen or sent to the market, and the barrel is filled. Then the top of the barrel is covered with boards, over which is spread a heap of straw or leaves. In this way it will keep excel lently until spring. The advantages of this method are that the cabbage is ac cessible at all times, whether the ground is frozen or not. and then it is, in every way, more convenient than the ordinary pit or hole iu the ground so often used.
