V8 SUMMER CARE OF THE CALLA. Tur Ilia Tott on Their Side it nil (live the Mailt a Heat. How to care for (ho cull; duriiist tlio ftirnuier in tho iiiM satisfactory way iooms to bo a question on which many frowers of it tlitiVr. Some keep it prow ins all through the year, ami because it does comparatively well with this treat ment they argue that the ,iropor way in to keep it growing, I'tit writer iu Tlio American Agriculturist (loos not boliuvo lu this plan. He says: There should K a period of rest. My (lan is to put tlio pot containing tho plants out of doors iu Juno, turn thorn on thrir sides iu some partially shelter ed place, anil there I leavo them until September, w ithout any attention what ever. After a short timo tho foliage turns yellow, ami very soon it drops off, because tho soil iu tho pot is becoming dry. Iu two weeks after putting theiit ont you would not fiipect thcruwusa live root in the soil it eontaius. Cut tho live root is there, all prepared. Ono would naturally think tho root would wither away, lntt it does not. Although the Boil ahout it seems robbed of all moisture, tho root holds enough to re tain plumpness. Iu September I prepare a frreli com post of mucky earth, souio sharp (Kind and a little loam. If the roots are strong, good sized ones I use an eight inch iot ; to plant them iu. Good draiuago must ' be provided, for, while the plant likes a preat deal of moisture at its roots while growing, it dx's not take kindly to stag ii ant water about them. Keep the soil moist or wet by frequent applications ; of water rather than by confining it to the pot by imperfect drainage. An im perfectly drained (soil soon becomes sour ' and heavy, and this induces disease. And au unhealthy call a seldom gives ' flowers. Plant tho roots so that tlio i crown will be two or three inches un der tho soil water well, and in a short time young leaves will appear. Then give more water, but do not keep tho soil very moist until strong growth has ' begun. If there are two or three rjoi!, strong roots, do not separate them, bet j give a larger pot, if necessary. I prefer i to grow two or three roots of blooming I uize in the same pot, boeanse tho qnan- I tity of foliage will be much greater than when but one root is used to a ixit, end there will be as many again flow er. i (fiveu proper care, a pot contain- ing two strong roots ought to have at least ono flower opeu anil a bud show ing nearly all of the time from Janua ry to April. . , A New Pear. A new pear is being introduced from Toronto. It is claimed to be extremely ! valuable, not only on account of the ' cuperior quality of the fruit, bat bo- j THE OEMFSBT PEA 8. cause of the extreme bardinesa of the tree. As described in The Rural New Yorker, it is produced from a seed of the Bartlett fertilized with Duchesse d'AngouIeme. Tree an upright, good grower. Fo liage large, glossy dark green, resem bling both parents. Fruit large obtuse pyriform, irregular in outline. Skin smooth, green, changing to yellow as it ripens with a slight brown tingo where exposed to the sum Stem about an inch long, stout and set slightly to one side. Calyx shallow. Flenk white, fine grained, tender, buttery, almost , melting, with n rich, sweet, delicious j flavor. As a dessert or market pear it I is of tbo highest merit. It will stand transportation to the most distant mar ket. Season, October and November. . BsrdineM of ngllih Ivy I Much has been written regarding the, hardiness of this plant. The English ivy is perfectly hardy so far as frost is concerned, and when grown under nat ural conditions it needs no protection. It is not the frost alone that dooa tho damage; the great trouble lies in the fact that it is too ofteu planted with a southern exposnre for protection (?) from frost, and iu winter conies in contact , with our warm sun, which thaws tho foliage and tender wood almost daily, setting it in action only to to frozen again at night. By these extremes the tissue of the leaves is destroyed and the plant often dies. Ivies, like many other evorgroeus, love sluide, and if given a northern exposure will seldom suffer I and will need no other protection, says a QOiTespondeiit in American Garden-1 in I ' Mow tu l ight the Hone Hug. A remedy for the rose hug was a sub-1 Joet for discussion at the lioston Mar at Gardeners' association. The grapo growers of Concord agreed that the only remedy of coiiseeccnco, as yet discov ered, was to jar them off by hand into a pan with a little kerosene oil in the bottom. If this is followed up daily in the cool Lours of tho morning, tho (Top may be saved. If one has but few vim or rosebushes, thoy may be protected by covering with mosquito netting. In 3 POINTS IN IRRIGATION. By Ira C. IIiiIiIm'11 at the Western Kium j Irrigation Association Convention, ! Tho necessary water for irrigation ; pnrpvtses can easily Iki bad tosiKWssfnl i ly care for thousands of acrca of land in 1 our state by the building of dirt dams across draws and retain the run otT ; waters of our storms. . The building of tliono dams claims you earnest attention. They are of eny construction and not expensive. The two essoin ial points are, flint, enough dirt five trout stones roots etc. ; Hoeotid, an ample spillway, so that under no cirou instances the water goes over the top of the dam. Iu the construction ot those dams as in tho building of reser voirs, we can here sxuk of thorn only inn general way. With a maximum height of say 10 fiH't, the bank should be say 0 feet wide on top, with a slope of say 3 to 1 on the water side and say 1 l' to 1 en the outside, increasing the width on top mid tho slopes as tho height of the banks are increased. Heservoirs can Iki made water tight by tho tramping of nuimals. Iu tho use of wiudiuills tho reservoir for purposes of distribution of the wa ter upon tho land is required to meet a twofold purpose where tho souree of water supply is from wells one to al low tho water to warm, the other to give tho necessary volumo of water I short timo to properly and economically cover thu ground and where tho source of supply is from impounded storm wa-l tors the distributing reservoir is still a necessity for reason just givou. Although it is true that wind power is cheap, so is it true that it is often times unreliable. I recommend other combinations than wind ixiwers. Wher- j ever a combination consisting of a gas oline engine and centrifugal pump can bo used have nothing else. This stylo of engiuo is made by a number of rep-, ntablo concerns, and iu buying them; insist upon tho maker' guarantee as to size of shafts, Ix'iiriugs and general con-' structiou, so that you get heavy, well designed and well built engine. Those engines have no steam boilers and can easily lie run 10 hours per dav without any more attention than you give your windmills. A centrifugal pump baa no valves of any naturo or description and absolutely nothing to get out of repair. They are not perpetual motion machines, and no reputable maker claims that they are, but any competent authority will recommend them to you as highly effi cient and of a moderate first cost Anlilaiaui Fowl. The Audalasiaus are usi'ful and hand some fowls, being, according to general testimony, the hanlhwt of all the Spau ish breeds. These fowls, which are some times called Dlue Spanish, bave plum age of slaty blue, often slightly laced with a darker shade. They are prolific layers of large white eggs. Chickens are hardy and grow vig- A FAIR OF ANIlM.U.HKSS. orously, of tho samo type aa the Black ' Minorca and require tho samo condi tions of treatment iu winter quarters. . Hens' eggs weigh 2 1-7 to 2J4 ounces each, or 1 pound 1 1 tmnci-s per dozon. : This breed appears each yuar to increase ' the number of its admirers. A Cheap 1'urtalile Fence. Sheep men are very much interested in a cheap, portable feueo that can be easily moved from plaoo to place. Where shocp are to be fed on rape, turnips or ! other green crops, or whero they are grain fed on poor pasture, such light J and portable feuees aro very conven-' ient What shall they be made of? Wood hi generally used, but there are some serious drawbacks to wood when one has much of tho fencing to da The wooden panels aro heavy and clumsy to carry about. A corresixjudent of Rural New Yorker uses wire fencing, fasten ing by wire or strings to iron posts easi ly movable. Such a fence is easily put up and quickly changed so as to give a fresh place for feeding. Notes of Local Interest. The continued dry weather during the hay growing season resulted iu a comparative failuro of tho hay crop in many sections of tho west. Continental Europo is again suffering from a forage famine, and this year the west, at h ast iu this country, will bo unable to go to tho relief of the feeders there. It is reported that the Texas red oat is a suro cropper under irrigation. The director of the Iowa weather serv ice has no confidence in the art of rain making. Professor Otto Lugger, state entomol ogist, in response to a call from the farmers of Minnesota, has established an infection box to propagate tho chinch Lug disease. The field bean iu some of its varieties Is worthy of attention by every farmer. In many sections tho fall seeding of timothy will prove a success if the con ditions aro favorable. Generally speaking, straw is worth n.oro on tho farm than it is to sell. The yield of wheat in tho west, it is reported, promise to be nlx.vo the av erage. Wine will sivrn be transported in France in great r:iilv.':y nu.lui like e troleum iu Au:em:a. California beekeepers are pro he-ying scarcity of honey ior loli4. Tho sheep gadfly (CEstnw ovis), the parent of "grub in the head," is quiti small and is very difficult to catch when it is flying about among the sheep. Thu presence of this fly may be suspected when the sheep and laml are seen to huddle together, thrust tlieir noses into the earth orlxincath each other aud stamp ubout with their foro feet, now and again running a few yards, as if to. escape. Tliiise flies are ever on the alert to seenro an opportunity to deposit larva; in tho sheep's nostrils. There aro at least two erroneous opinions which have beuomo quito firmly established in the minds of farmers. One is that the fly deposits eggs in the nostrils; but, as noticed aliovo, tho gadfly is viviparous, giving birth to its young alive, iu this instance as lrvie. The other false idea is that tho larvas, after ascending tho nostril, attack the brain itself. When tho larva; obtain a lodgment in the rim of the nostril, they gradually work their way upward into the head They are usually found to be present in great est numbers in the frontal sinuses. There are threo natural aud simple preventives which are helpful: Plenty of dust for tho sheep to lie and stamp in; tall grass to graze in, which has a tendency to brush off and frighten away tho fly, and dark, cool sheds, where the sheep can bo folded during tho heat of the day and again liberated after sun set. Herbert W. Mumford iu Ameri can Agriculturist. Htock on the Farm, It pays to keep stock on tho farm, even when the price is very low. Ani mals can always be disposed of at prices that pay for cost of feed and labor spent on them. One of tho best reasons for keeping live stock, however, is that with it tho farm steadily grows richer and produces larger corps. An exchango says, speaking of this subject, "The farmer who sells a ton of wheat worth, say, $20 to t25. sells $7.75 worth of nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash, while the fanner who sells a ton ot sheep worth to$100 sells ouly$9.46 Of fortuity.
