Miss Harrington has received (he high est honor that the class can give her, tie poBMirn of president of the gradua , ting class of 'S'5. OSWEGO SCHOOL. . Our public school closed last Friday. The teitu was cut short one month for economy's Bake, and the closing exer cises Were not what they would have been had the school run the full term. However, the examination showed that excelent work had been done in all de partments uf the school during the past eigtit months. There was not the num ber of parents present that should have been. Rev. R. M. Jones delivered a short address of kindly counsel and ad monition to the pupils. Hon. F. L. Mintie, chairman of the board of direc tors, delivered a speech to the children in his usual happy style. Mr. Prosser was called 'upon for a speech, but excused himself on account of a severe cold, The school then sung as a parting eong, a noug entitled "Oregon Our Home." This eong, (words and music) was composed by Prof. Junes and dedicated to the Oswego public schools. Prof. Jones and bis corps of teachers, Miss Fox. Miss Iiickner and Miss Miller deserve great credit for the manner in which the School has been conducted during the past year. Prof. Jones has labored under disadvantages. He did not receive the cordial supoit and co-operation of all those whose dity it was to give liitn their full support, but he has done Ilia duty through all, ami were it left to to a vote of the district he would get a large majority in his favor as principal for the next term. The board of direc tors met last evening to consider claims, audit bills, etc. The teachers for the coiiiim. year will probably be elected next iBjntb. Tho microphone is a very simple instrument' Indited. Three ordinnry round nails and a tiuarw piece of wood will fiirm a very mnxl mi crophnmi Two of tho uuila are laid parallel to but not touching each other. Tho third nail is hud across the first two, which are connected iu circuit with a battery and n telephone rtoviver. Tho nails of course are laid on the flat, square piece of wood, which ant us a founding board and transmits to the nails tiny vibration which may tuko place upou it. Every sound is reproduced exactly as It is ma.lo, except that it is much mag nified. When a tly performs its toilet, the rasping of the nu.u legs against the wings or tho rubbing of the iitenuro may be distinctly heard. Tho htnezing of the insect makes a terrific, uoisu. Wheu, for instance, a fly, confined iu in a pastolKuird box, uttempts to walk around his prison, the vibration cnuneu by his movements is couveyed through the sounding board to tho nails which, in their turn, interfere with the Hrfoct passage of the electric current as it travels across the places where they rest npou each other. A largo vibration produces a correspondingly largo sound iu the telephone, and so ou dowu to tho smallest degree of miiiutcmwa. The principle of the action of the In strument depends ou the interruption of on electric current which putvoa through tho telephone. Tho apparatus for this interruption iu so delicately poised that any sound will cause a vi bration accurately reprixlueod iu tho telephone. Seasickness, as it is always tvnuud, is caused by a rolling about of the in nor parts of tho body the vital parts and intestines a shaking or disturb ance. Now, a simplo remedy for that dreadful malady is to get a couple of sheets of ordinary foolscap paper and place them over your breast and stom ach, binding them on with a wide band age of cloth, liuen preferably, long enough to go quito around the body, all this, of course, under all clothing. This has beeu tried with good results by many. How Sketching Should IU Don. Begin by "blocking in" the whole figure, indicating tho place aud shape of the most marked shadows. The great toe is bent iu and pushes one or more of the smaller toe out of position, raising them on one Joint iu a form which the doctors call "hammer toes. " Surgeons have provid ed for this nu apparatus which is to bo worn all night, and if possible during leisure in the daytime.
