The stale roll had been carefully revised and cor rected, and now show 1030 school, as compared with 800 school of last year. Ilia report shows tliat Oregon ha 20 8 per cent of her total population enrolled in Sunday schools; acoording to the last International stutistics there are but three states in the union making a bet ter showing. She said, in part: 'The character of the Chautauqua, as semblies ia to he decided by tne Chris tian people of the stute; they can decide it If thev will but realize thut thoirs is the privilege, the responsibility and the duty. The original Chautauqua assem bly hud for its prime object the moral instruction of Sunday school touchers and of Sunday school pupils. The sci entific and literary leatures were intro duced at h ht'or date. Wednesday eveninu's session was of unusual interest. Mrs. C. H. Dye led the devotional service, and the program was intersiiersed with musical selection that were grand. The annual report of the secretary was given, and interesting addresses were made by lievs. VanScoy and Grant. Clarke contribute the following concerning Indian relic found in and around Oregon Citv, to the Oregonian: "The time will come when aboriginal memento will poaaeH value, and the time ia faat pacing by when they can be gathered together. No doubt, while lime ahall laat plowaharea will turn up arrow-lieada not Infrequently; but we whoao cloaely followed the aboriginal h:e net little alore on what will be prised In time to come. To n they are common, for beautiful arrow-head are found at fiaheriea or on old camping ground, or upon the battlefield of the pait. We turn up mortar and petle that have biatorie engraved upon them with Indifference. When we ak the In dian who survive, we are aurpried that be ha no Idea of their origin, and our occasional collector cheriah linage and collect atone work that no race claim. The only anawer the siwaah mukea ia that they were made and uted by boma race that preceded their own. Mr. W. C. Jobnaon ha antiquarian taate that are ahow n in a collection of curio and antique gathered, literally, at great expenae, from the four co-ner of the earth, including many memento of the aborigine of our own section. She corroborates the continual story the Indian tell, that tbinga moatly are left from a prehistoric rai:e. She eay year ago she made a friend of an Indian woman at Oregon City who gave her val uable Information. When they talked of making the canal and lock at the falls, thia woman told her that her peo ple had found and buried a large atone frog that wa left bv the ancient people, that would be right in the path of the c!:- ;nd must be dug up. If dug up, it would be followed by flood and atorms that would reault in great dam ai;e, for the great spirit of the old race resented any meddling with their relic. The atone frog waa, sure enough un earthed and thrown out by the canal huildera, and, aure enjugh, the winter saw tearful floods and the Indian eaid their prophecy bad come true. The stone frog wa in Dr. Rudely' keeping at East Portland, and should be gath- erej into a state muaeuin, witti all such i other relics. Mrs. Johnson also tells me that her husband leniembera Unit, when he was a lad of 15, nearly or fully half a cen tury ao, men were engaged in Uitfcinu a ditch in front of Governor A tiernethy'e place, on the river just below Oregon . . shoulders of a full-sized stone figure of 1 a inun, closely resembiing the Indian in j every resect, liaiber than unearth ! and exhume this image of heroic proiwr- I lions, tlicv chanued the course of the ditch ; but some time later, when it oc curred to him that this image was worthv of notice, he went to find it and it was non est. The supposition was (hut the Clackumus I, Mi ns had taken it lip and consigned it to the safe keeping of the Willamette ckw-e by. They at tributed all these works to a prehistoric race, and were afraid to leave them ex posed, as they said the spirits who ruled that ancient people were very poweiful still, and were sure to resent any trifling with or neglect of the temuins of their of their favorite people. What became I of that people they do not know. I Mr. J. P. Shaw, of Oregon City, tells j of a great fir tree that bad a history. "It is called 'the chief'a tree, and stood in what is known as Full' View, the bluff overlooking the falls. It wss one of the forest inonarchs, at least seven feet in diameter, is now destroyed, but in it life was known as the ch'efs tree and I wus ,,B5Ml s a "ttoe 01 execution lor mai efuctors, thepiisoner Wing tied to the tree and then put lo ileum, lnenrst one executed waa a chief of some note. hence the nume. Since the tree wus cut down, Mr. Charley Porter, who lives close by, and others have dug around it and found Indian relics buried hernia spear-heads, old Chinese coins, stone and flint wen no n 8. and articles evidently got 0f ( t.3 wltites. Among them was an old time silver spoon, marked M. B., that I think Mrs. Charles Porter still has." H. C. Stevens, of Oregon City, also has a large collection of ieifect arrow-head-i, said to nnnihr 5,1 00, all gath i red in the vicinity of tno tails, that he ho'ds at great value. It is said the Smi ht-onian Institute has an eye on Ilium, to add to its collection. Everything Willi the Times.
