Werschkul, Portland' ixipular vocalist, ha been engaged to conduct tho singing class which is being organised by some of the musical young people of this city, and which promises to be a great success. Prof. Werschkul Is a thorough musician w hose composi tions rank among tbe best works of the land, and whose ability as an instructor is unsurpassed. The young people are to be congratulated on securing bis srrviceH as his influence cannot help but elevate the musical standard of any community. A very pleasant party took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hradley hint Friday evening the occasion being In honor of the 13th birthday of their daughter Nettie. The evening was spent in games, after which refresh ment were served . Those present were Nettie Hradley, Pearl Wood, Nellie Wood, Hersa Hcddick, Iris Reddick, Kit tie Gault, Carl Nehren, Clara Nehron, Wilda Harris, Mertie Winoset, Ida Kelly. Font tied the knot in hi usual pleasant manner in the presence of a few friends. Mr. Scoggina is an employe in the paper luilla, and the couple have a host of friend who wish them a long and happy lifo. Prof. Werschkul' vocal class will meet in the First Presbyterian church on each Thursday evening commencing Nov. 22. Tuition fee $1.60 per term. This Is an excellent opportunity for all who desire to become proficient in sight reading and chorus singing. One of the institutions of Oregon City that Is acquiring a permanency and which bt becoming the nucleus for the building up of a library in our city, is the Oregon City Free Heading Room. Started in a small way two year ago by soma of the public spirited citizens of Oregon City, who saw the need of a place where strangers, idle men and boys could pas tlii.lr time pleasantly and profitably away from the vice of the street, ha lived and been self austainlng even during these hard time. In addi tion to the regular contilbution the reading room ha received several sub stantial donation during the year in book, magazines, furniture and fuel which were greatly appreciated. Tlie room are now fairly well furnished and present an attractive appearance. The attendance ha been much larger during the past year than wa anticipated and shows how well the inilituiion ia appreciated by the public. Much of the credit for the success of the reading room is due to Rev. Wall, the librarian, who ha been untiring in his efTort to carry out the work of the as sociation. Thursday of next week' will close the fiscal year 'or the association, when officer will be elected, reports made and other important business transacted. It is expected that all in terested in the work of the association wiii be present. R. II. Taber, one of the successful farmer ol Mt. Pleasant, donated to the agricultural editor of this family journal four potatoes that are prize winners. The shortest one measured nine and the long est one eleven inches in length and were of unusual qizeand symmetrical in shape. They were of the Beauty of Hebron variety. These potatoes grew on very high land and i but added proof that the hill land of Clackamas county can not be excelled in growing potatoes or any other crop.
