RAILWAY SUHOKOXS. EVERY LARGE RAILROAD NOW V AS ITS CORPS OF DOCTORS. They Are Very Varful In .Wmilng Krand alcnt Claliiia-lnacruintlniie Law ywra anil Doctor Try to "Work" llm Coiiipanlee. Tlth la the Railway Side, Doubt loss everyone know somi'tliitiR of the business o( tlio eye doctor, tho borso doctor and diver others to whom tho medical title is applied; but, with tho exception of the unfortunate individ mils who have come into contact with tho gentleman, few people know any thing about tho routine duties of tho railway doctor. It would be false rea soning to suppose that, because an eye doctor treats the orlw of vision and a horse doctor prescribes for horses, the business of a railway surgeou is to re pair railways. It might he said that in geueral tho disciple of Galen and Hippocrates knows as much about rail wads as the ordinary railway man knows about the art of Esculapius. Actuated by principles of philan- thropy and buims (a cynical outsider would iu all probability reverse the or der), nearly all the largo railways iu this country have instituUil what is kuowu as "rvli.f corps." Prominent members of this corps have formed an association known as the National As sociation of Railway Surgeon. The greater part of the railway snr gvou'a time is taken up iu attending to ocidcutd iu the yards. The men who sustain these injuries are, iu a majority of cases, the switchmen. A New Vork gentleman who has been connected with several railroads said: "You can always tell a switchman by oue of two things a bruiMHl thumb and a grievance. If ho hasn't just come out of an accident, he is just pettiug ready to strike. " Whereas tliere are numerous cases of passengtrs being seriously hurt, the vast majority of tho claims made upon the railroads for injuries are fraudulent Half of these claims would never be heard of if there did not exist a class of lawyers who just watch the papers for news of a railroad aocident and pounce upon the injured with alacrity. Allied with them is a different class of "rail way surgeons" that cost the companies great deal, but who are paid indirect ly. If tiny find a man who has a slight contusion, they prove to him, aud to a jury sometimes, that he is suffering from a t-eYere concussion of the spine. Their fine work is in what are known as spin::l injuries. If a train of passen gers happens to be slightly jostled, near ly every oae aboard, with the aid of these doctors, may develop a case of spinal ilisi'xse. If a man insists he has "shooting pains" in the back, no one can say him nay, and iu absence of proof that he has not a jury will natu rally give him damaged. The "railway Burgeons" referred to have no associa tion that is kuowu, but they know their business from alpha to omega. They instruct their pupils as to all the symp toms of the disease they are supposed to have, aud in learned terms amaze the ordinary country jury. On roads like the Pennsylvania and the Central Railroad of New Jersey there are regular surgeons at stated points, and as soon as an accident oc curs they are immediately sent for. They have the jiower of calling such extra help as they deem necessary. Roads on which a surgeon is a paid official claim that through him mnch money has Iweu saved. Outsiders would grow dizzy with wonder if they knew of the uue.'i.t of suits and claims that arise from railroad acei leuts. The offi cials, however, remain imperturbable. They know that most of tho claims are spurious, aiid on investigation will fade away like a mist before tho rising sun. To investigate such claims and to settle in cases of real damage are the duties of the claim agent The railway sur geon aud tho claim agent are to the man who has a fraudulent claim a source of horror and disgust. An Illinois surgeon tells of one inter esting claim. A man who was traveling In company with a number of friends was thrown arross the aisle of a car by a slight accident that jostled every one, but in reality hurt no one. He went home all right, but after several days' deliberation he made up his mind that his head was paining him. From then on he would drop in to see the people who had seen him thrown and in the midst of a serious conversation would make, some idiotic remark about the price of beans in Pennsylvania. After awhile, he induced his friends to believe he was crazy. The company heard of his strange proceedings and began a lit tle investigation. They found that his crazy fits were confined to certain cir cles. Among business people his actions were those of a perfectly sunn man. He never overpaid his workmen, uor did he bny anything at double what it was worth. People v. ith whom he was doing business were informed from what source may bo guessed that Mr. A. was insane. Mr. A. finally came to the conclusion that if he wanted to retain his business the best thing he could do was to spread abroad reports of his rapid and complete recovery, and he did. The surgeons are frequently the spec tators of almost incredible coolness. One tells a story of a Texas engineer named Ben Blunt. The surgeon gives the account in the words of Blunt: "Well, you see, I was in the cab, and everything looked all right ahead, when suddenly the engine turned by a mis placed switch, and the first thing I knew I was all tangled up between the engine and a freight train. The next thing I knew I heard some oue say, 'He's dead. Stories about 1 7 year locusts nro be coming as woolly as the grasshopper stories of last year. Down iu Sullivan county an advance guard of locusts entered a potato field and began their usual work of destruc tion. Tho potato bugs appareutly thought that this was an eneroachtneut on their rights. For two days farmers noticed a g",rtt migration of bugs to ward that particular field. They travel ed along tho road in squadrons and bat talions and seemed to bo under regular leaders. It became plain that tho won! had been pass! to all potato bugs iu the vicinity that their help was wanted, aud they were prepared for war. They assembled on onosidoof tho field, whiW the locusts gathered on tho other. Then came tho battle. The bugs' plan of campaign was to cover that portion of the field which they were defending, so whenever a luckless locust or detach ment of locusts attempted to alight on it tho plucky booties would pounce upon j thoir enemies and tear ami claw them to pieces. The locusts began making rtigular attacks, and tho slaughter of both insects was very great, while be tween them they left nothing of the potato vines. The fight lasted for two days. Then there seemed to be a truce. As a result, it is noticed now iu Sulli van county that whenever the locusts approach a field of potatoes the bugs retire from about one-third of it Tho locusts destroy that Kirtiou and leave the rest for the beetles to oat at their leisure. It is iuferred that this is in ac cordance with tho terms of the peace. The pluckiest fight agaiust locusts that I have heard of, however, was made by a ram iu Dutchess couuty. Ho was the patriarch of tho flock aud of course considered himself its loader and pro tector. When the locusts invaded his pasture, he noticed that food became scarce. So ho set to work to destroy the plunderers. Of course he had no other weatjon than the oue provided him by nature his big, hard head. Ho ran about the field bunting and crushing the locusts. Wheuever ho could get one against a tree, he would smash it Ho kept that work up with great energy for two wholo days, not stopping to eat anything himself. But the numbers of his enemies were too great, and at the end of the second day tho self sacrific ing animal sank down and died of ex haustion. Buffalo Express. ONCE A POWER IN IOWA. Bat Ex-Corvrnor Sherman I Now a Clerk In a Country Store. From the office of the governor of a great state to the position of floorwalk er of a big store that seems not only improbable, but impossible, and yet there is an incident of the, kind on rec ord. Following Governor Gear's retire ment from the office of chief executive of Iowa came Burcn R. Sherman, who for two years made an excellent govern or. Just why the precedent of a second term was not followed I cannot say un less it was that the opposing wing in the Republican party was too strong for Mr. Sherman and his friends. At all events, he Btepped down aud ont and . pursued the even tenor of his way as a private citizen. In some man ner the cards refused to break even for Governor Sherman, and as a last resort he was compelled to accept a position as floorwalker in the largest store in the city of Des Moines. In this honorable but by no means exalted position he dis charged his duties cheerfully and was so affable and pleasant that tho public learned to like trading at Des Moines' big department establishment It was a shrewd business movement upon the part of the proprietors, and they reaped great benefits therefrom for a long time. Eventually, however, the ex-governor dropped out of the clerks' society and quietly disappeared from notice. No one seemed to have missed him particularly, and but few inquired after the nrbane ex-governor and oblig ing floorwalker. Recently, however, an old time friend of Mr. Sherman hap pened to be in a certain village in north eastern Iowa and stepped into a store to buy a shirt There was ex-Governor Sherman, measuring calicoes, tying up groceries and performing other duties devolving upon a country clerk in a country store. Old time memories were revived, and the traveler remained over a train in order to have a visit In relating those circumstances the gentleman said: j "I don't know what ails the governor. I I reckon he has lost his grip. Ho seems i to be satisfied with his job and appar , ently has no ambition to better himself. He was once a power in Iowa; now he is nothing but a dry goods clerk. I don't understand it" Chicago MaiL A New Calendar Sugg-eated. Austin Tyler, the well known invent or, innovator and iconoclast, has ar ranged a new calendar, chiefly for busi ness men, which has 13 months in the year instead of 12. Each month, ex cept the thirteenth month, he has ar ranged to have 28 days, which, be con tends, will simplify and expedite the calculation of interest The odd day will fall in the thirteenth month, which in the interest tables can be easily ar ranged. He says that several bank pres idents have given their approval of his calendar, and his belief is that it will finally be adopted. He points to the fact that Russia has two calendar:!, one for the church and one for business pur poses. The odd month, be thinks, should be called Christmas. New York Com mercial.
