The Kntkuckixk rppobllahea audi coinmenla went iiitdo by the newt' paperi of the towna whoae toauii took part In the luat tuiirnameiit, All the towna except Aatoilu cannot any enough In priilao of their trealiiient lulli by the firemen and citlr.mii of Oregon City, ami were perfectly aatiaflcd with the rulinga of the Judges In the varloti rurca and coiileata. It la to be n gtelled that the A a tor la team by their own coiiduct marred the harmony that otherwise pre' vaihxl among tho teKiim. At The Dalle loiirnament a year ago tho Aatorla buy are credited with conducting theinaelvea aa gcrith men, but the team wua in onacruptiluiia hand tl ia yenr. They were bent un winning, even if they had to ri-Miirt to unfair inrana. Among the aharp practici a tliut they indulged in wa nut to reel up all of their !n hut leave one aectiun lying on tup of the reel when It would come off quickly, and In putting on their nurnle did not acre it on but held It with their lunula. Fur tlil Uiey were rulod out bv the judge and had no cauae for complaint. The Corvallla Evening Infurmer haa the following to aay uf the Curvullia boy a and their part In the lomiminetil ; "The Curvullia huae team returned tialny fruin Oregon City, having carried off three pri.ea. In the wet teat yeater day our boya took M-rond money, :g), and Fred Olxrer won the HHJ yurda race ill II 1-6, The prize, a prize nor.le, waa prvaeiitud to the Oreuun City boya, a a amall recoguiliuii of the kind treat ment ahown our boya, who can't any enough alniut their good treatment. Aatoria, after all ita loud talking, did nothing and ipiietly made a aiwak for home. It will lie quite a aurpriae to aome to hear tliat Oberer Won the 100-yard race, aa he waa cunaldcrt'd atxiut the aloweat man In the team, but he la all right. In the chainpioiiahip race, aome ouiaider yelled to abut off (lie water, and Terry Naah, thinking it waa one of our boya, o!.eyel, thereby losing the race, aa they were bU accuude ahead of any of the team on the run. The boya wear upon the lnela ol their coata a yellow badge, which haa upon It the worda, ''JOO Yard Champion Hub and Hub Team," and they are ready to defend it at any time and fur any amount. The Columbian give the following ac count of the return of the Vuncoover team: "Wednesday waa a red letter day in the hiatury of the volunteer fire depart ment of lb! city, it being the day of their triumphal return from tho Oregon City tournament, where they won about all the glory that there waa lobe won. Sunday morning after a brief run with their huae cart the boya started to Oregon City, arriving Monday morning where they were met by the Oregon City boya with a royal welcome. "Soon after the arrival at the Rene of tho conteat, after they had met their com petitors from various parts of the state, they were out with their hone cart for practice and training for the great event Ity a mishap they broke the cart which would have proved a serious drawback to them had not a blacksmith promptly repaired it, fur which he would not re ceive a cent in payment. Of tho hos' pitnhty of tho Oregon City boya the Vancouver firemen neyer tire of talking. Tuesday afternoon a telegram was r- ceived by Chief Caples in which he staled that tho Vancouver boya had won everything worth winning. Upon the news of this welcome intelligence the firemen who had remained at home immediately set to work to give their re turning companions a fitting reception. Ti e engine house waa decorated with flags and bunting, the services of the city band procured and upon the arrival of the heroes they were met at the dock by the whole fire department and a largo concourse of citizens, among whom were the mayor and members of the city council, and escorted to engino house Xo. 1. Hero as soon aa the storm of apphitiHO subsided Mayor Dun ielH was introduced by Chief Caples of tho reception committee. In behalf of the reception committee the mayor thanked the boys for the grand achievement, saying their succeaaaiul skilled abroad waa evi dence of their having aealuuMy done their duty at homo. lie expressed sat infaction in tho safe and effective condi tion ol the Vancover fire department. Judge N. H. Bloomfleld was then called upon, and in his happy vein congratu lated the boys on thoir accomplishment, after which ho gave his exiierience as a fireman, saying his resignation was caused bv his inability to "get there" when tjere was a fire. He said on one occasion during his briuf experience as a fireman an alarm was turned in, he bounded out of bed, lit out for ttie tiro, flrat going to the engine house he found tho boys gone, following he traversed the principal streets of the city going in every direction, asking everybody bo mot where the fire waa, until he met the firemen returning after having put out the fire. As a fireman the judge said he was not a success so he resigned. Nat Young the president of the com pany then thanked the mayor, the city council and the people of Vancouver fur tho generous welcome that had been tendered them, The prizes won by our firemen amount to $150 cash. They won second prize 2,1, on the huli-and hull content the that day, but their great effort waa made to capture first prize on th!r fav orite, the New Yoik conteat. This thny accompliahed, taking down $100 prize money and (he tuuriiuuieiit championship. The Eugene Guard give the following reason for thi-lr being no team from Fugimo at the tournament : "The Oregon City Ea rKumiHn, among other things has this to say, concerning the recent firemen's loiirnament held in thut city : "It was expected that teams from all the larger towns in the stute would be present and coinote in the races, but the companies of fulcm, Al bany, Kugene and McMlnnville and several others were unable to raise the necessary m"ncy to defray their ex penaea, their towns being evidently too niggardly to deserve a good fire com pany." Eugene has un of the best lire department in the state of Oregon ami the city is nut "niggardly" with the boy? either. Our boya do not Intend competing wilh pirifcaxiumil foot raeers. As is a well known fart the "firemen" attending am h events are generally hired for the oci aaion at ao many ilollutsa day." The Aatorlan, Itudget und Herald con demn the tournament in unmeasured terms, The following is from tho Her ald whose editor was a drleguto to the tournament : The Aatoria llremen never went to a tournament where they were treated a contvuiptihld as at Oregon City. From the vety first a fight waa made auuinat the Aatorians, and it wasojwnly stated on the streets that Aatorians would not get a prize even if they won it. From the commencement of the tourna ment a lepresentutlve from Oregon City came to Astoria to nuii'y the firemen "that no professorial would lie allowed to run." Consequently a teutn was selected from the yuungur members of the department. They proved, how ever, to be the beat team in Oiegon City and would have won every race hod they been given a fair show. The fight against Aatoria started in the association meeting, and the gang of loughs from Curvallis and Vancouver, tome uf them too drunk to do business, worked against Aatoria aa the next place to hold the tournament and It waa derided to hold it at Vancou ver, There weie only three races, and the aggregate purse amounted to VZ. It isrepurtcd that there were only llMO on hand, and it waa necessary to give the Oregon City boys enough races ao that there would be money enough to pay an outside team if they won. .The coinmittte probably, had about f I'M) on hand. In the hub and hub race Oregon City and Vancouver run first, Vancouver w inning. ( orvalhs and Astoria run next Corvallis winning. The time made by the Vancouver team was 28 seconds, and the Astoria team 24. Instead of civ- ng Aatoria second money, the judges otitered Corvallis and Vancouver to run for first and second prize, w bice waa won by Coivullia. In the wet teat Vancouver ran first, making 54 4-5. Oregon City ran next, making 49. Corvallia third with 53 and Astoria next in 47V- The race wo decided in favor of Astoria, but after dinner someone, told the judges that the Astoria boys put a kink in the hose while the water was going through it and the judges refused to give the Astoria boys any time. This was in ac cordance with the brags made at the outset of the tournament. That settled it and tho Astoria boys were notified by tho captuin to pack up And go home. Tho delegates notified President O'Con nell that all four Astoria companies would withdraw from the association, which they did. This practically ended tho tournament, and no interest was taken in the New York race, most of the visitors going home when the Astoria team did. The Portland firemen and nearly every visitor condemned the ac tion of tho judges and the sympathy waa with the Aaturia team. The judges were a set of damn fools who did not know the difference between a baby's nursing bottle and a length of hose. They were biased and prejudiced against the Astorians from the start and the boys new it would be useless to run I the New York race, for if they won it tho judges would rule them out on S'ime pretext. Every ono that knows any thing about tiro matters know thut it is impossible for any ten men to put a kink in hoao when water is going through it, but aa the judges didn't know any better they listened to some of the lying whelps that accompanied the Corvallis and Vancouver teams. The Corvallis team was made up of professionals, tnd when a protest was niado the judges refused to entertain it. notwithstanding the printed rules of the tournament prohib ited it, and Astoria was notified that it would not be allowed. The rules ulso require that the dues must be paid bo fore teams can enter, but the Corvallis team did not pay any dues, but were allowed to enter notwithstanding a pro test. The Astoria team does not blame tho Oregon City boys or its gentlemanly officers. It does not blame the Van couver department, but does bliune the udges and the hobos, thugs and gangs in some of the teams. It is safe to say that Astoria will never send another team to a firemen's tournament and that it will never have anything to do with the Firemcn'B Association. If they can't be treated decently they don't propose to go, The Herald i authorized to an nounce thut the Astoria team will run any team that was at the tourna ment fur $-000, Tho money will be de posited on twenty-four hours notice. Astoria ho the beat team, complied with the rules, behaved themselves as gentle men, and can outrun any hoao team In Oregon or Washington formoniy or fun. The Aatoria boy expect to be treated a gentlemen when they go from home. They did not receive that treatment and It wa a disgrace to the association that they did not. Aatoria has no further use for the Firemen's Association. The Albany democrat gives the fol lowing kick at the tournament and reas ons for the Albany team not taking part in the tournament : "The Oregon City Entkri-hinc give the following hard hit: It waa expected that teams from all the large towns would be present and com et e in the races, but the companies of Hulein, Albany, Eugene, McMinnville and aeveral other were unable to raise the necessary money to defray expenaea their towns being evidently too nig gardly to deserve a good fire company. Itut there ia no sense In in it. The Al bany fire company is one of the beat In the state; but it has learned several years ago that there was nothing In hir ing professional runner In order to win tournament prizes, and the prizes this year weie the most niggurdly in the history of the association.
