II. live on the corner of Ninth and Adams street. Mrs. Dye introduced a unique service for the entertainment of the young folks. She had taken the meats from a lot of wal nut and fastened the shells together again with mucilage so they bore no visible evidence ol having been tampered with, but upon onening.thcy were found to contain Binall bits of paer bearing questions to be answered, some of which required more or less characterization in order to fulfill their demands. The social bioke up at a late hour and all acknowledged it a most enjoyable even ing. Lsst Saturday I. LeMahieu sold the Oregon City" Courier to A. W. Cheney for $2,000. The political complexion of tho paper will continue democratic. Mr. LeMahieu started the paper ten years ago, and has conducted it since that time. His health is much broken and he finds it absolutely necessary to relinquish office work. He will go to his ram.h near Mount Pleasant and try farming for awhile, though he may resume newspa per work atBome ftituietime. Mr. Che ney has been foreman of the Courier for the past three years', and now that he is able to take hold of the business as sole proprietor the Estkri'risk wishes him every success in his new undertaking. Sunday's Oregoniau of September 0th announces the marriage of Dr. Frank Welch, the third son of Dr. John Welch formerly of this city, but now of East Portland, to Miss Elisabeth Mock at the residence of the brides parents Mr. and Mrs. Mock of University PaTk.Rey. M. M Lewis of the Second Baptist church officiating. The groom was born and grew to manhood in this city where he is well and favorably known, and his many friends extend hearty congratulations to he and bis bride. They left Monday evening on the Cana dian Pacific for the East where they will reside for the present. James Hougham, of New Era, died last Saturday at his home, a mile and a half south of New Era, at the age of 49 years. Mr, Hougham was a public spirited man and be will be greatly missed in that vicinity. The funeral occurred Sunday Sept. 9, under ttie auspices of Gavel Lodge No. 65, A. O. U. W. of which the deceased was a member and the remains were laid to rest in the Canby cemetery. A number of the members of Falls City Lodge No. 59 went to Canby Sun day morning to afcsint at the funeral ceremony. The deceased leaves a widow and three sons. For Sale or Trade. Glims, fourth grade; Nellie Younger, third grade; llattie Cochrane, second grade; May Kelly, first grade. The Kastharn school on Seventh street will employ flye teachers, viz: Prof. W. II. Powell, principal; Erma Lawrence, sixth grade; Ana Baird, fourth and filth grade; Ora Spangler, seeend and fourth grades: Molliu Ilaiiklns, first grade. The board have found it necessay to furnish an other room in the Eautham school as the roll has increased to such an extent as tociowd the four grades of last year. A sjieclal train of an engine and three palace cars standing on the siding at Oregon City Thursday proved to be a train of the private cars of the officers of the Southern Pacific who are on a tour of limpectioii of the Oregon lines. They left Oakland Saturday last and hail up to reaching Oreiton City made a thorough insfiection of the west side. Their stop at this place waa tu visit the falls and the work on the electric plant and the pulp and paper mills. The party con sisted of II. E. Huntington, first vice president, and son ; J. C. Stubbs, third vice-president, wife and daughter; J. A. Fillmore, gen'l supt.; II. Koebler, gen'l. manager; E. P. Rogers gen'l. passenger agent of Oregon lines; 8. R. Fields, supt. Oregon lines; Mr. Wil son, a San Francisco banker and wife. Conductor J. II. Andrews bad charge of the train and W. O. Molloy was engineer. The tour ended Tuesday evening by the return to Oakland, (.arfleld, Orrgoq. Died, September 12, little Noah R. Wills, son of Lee and Leatha Wills and grandson of Doc. Palmateer, aged two years and two days, lie was sick only thirty-six hours and was the pet of all who saw him.' So beautiful, so lovely, be has left our hearts so desolate. R. G. Palmateeb. Miss Gladys Jones of Oswego, who sang so beautifully at the Congrega tional church Sunday evening, re mained a day longer to attend the meet ing of the Young People's Glee Club at Mrs N. O. Walden's Monday evening. Miss Jones is a pupil of Mrs. McClel land, director of the Conservatory of Pacific university at Forest Grove. Mra. McClelland is a graduate of the Boston conservatory and a teacher of great suc cess in bringing out the voices of the pupils.
