Workmen at Hubbard.
Tho Ancient Order United Workman
of Hubbard and Aurora united in a cel
ebration and picnic here Tuesday.
About 1500 people were present from the
surrounding country, not a few coming
from Portland and tl'ia city. At 10:30, a
procession was formed at the railway
station, headed by the Aurora band and
including Company E. J. L. Calvert
was presidout ol the day. He introduced
L. H. Wells of Portland, who reviewed
tho history of the Workmen's organisa
tion. At 1 P. M. the audience re-assembled,
when the chairman introduced Dr.
T. C. Mai key, of Albany, grand master
of Oregon, who made a maateriy address
on tho objects and aims of the order.
He showed the growth of the order in
Oregon for the past eleven months to be
most remarkable, notwithstanding the
financial .depression. The grand mas
ter complimented the lodge of Hubbard
and Aurora, for Ihi display of enthusi
asm and Interest. The address wag
listened to with close attention and made
a deep impression. The rest of the after
noon was taken up in military drilling,
games, etc., closing in the evening with
a dunce. Much of the success of the
affair was due to the activity of Mr. Isi
dore Isaacson, who was the general man
ager.
"Keep a JuiiinlnV
The following story from an exchange
will interest the merchant of Oregon
City :
"The storekeeper who expect to do
much business In 1894 must practice the
lesson taught in the following story :
"Two frog found themselves in a pail
of nrlk, and they could not jump out.
One of them was for giving up, and said
to the other 'Goodby: I sink. I die!'
Said hi mate, 'Brace up, you duller!
Keep a jumping: and see what turn
up.' So limy kept jumping up anil
down all night, and by morning had so
churned the milk that it turned to butter
and they jumped off the butter to the
ground.
Applied to business the fable means:
If you want the business of 1S04 to ex
ceed that of 18113 "keen a jumping."
Don't cry, "I sink, I diet" The mer
chant who continue looking for bud
time will not survive to see good times.
Tlie man who keeps a jumpin' will see
good time first. Carry a level bead,
buy standard goods, and keep a good
clean stock, an attractive Btore and ad
vertise with bright, attractive ad.
