The people up that way are good republican as any one can see who rides through that fertile section ami see how the hard working farmers have made it blossom like the rose. Fine buildings and well tilled acres don't make populists. Mr. Uutperlet, well-known audi staunch democrat of New Kra precinct, I is not an enthusiastic Oanohg man this I year for the reason that darning's care-1 lessnesscost him dear last year, lie) came down to pay his taxes and when I be received his receipts, thinking the amount not unite enough he asked par ticularly if that was all. being assured mat it was, lie went home. If you want a populist government you must make up your mind to do without factories and improvements. If you desire the mills then vote solid against populism. You take your choice when you vote next Monday. Once in awhile some fellow is found who is rehashing the old threshed out story about F.li Maddock's not paying his taxes. Pres ton, a gambler about town attempted to end his life by deliberately walking into the river at the foot of Third street. The water was shallow near the shore on ac count of the rise, but he struck right out and waded for deep water till he went beyond his depth. Several saw him go in and Frank Brown hurried to his res cue in a boat. He was clinging to a wil low twig and sunk twice before Frank pulled him out. He neither called for help nor ofTered any explanation after lie was brought ashore, gent than he thought they were. They sav that they know what thev want and what is right and don't need to lie told how to vote. One day last week he was in the place of business of a German and was talking politics in German when the proprietor told him either to talk Eng lish or quit talking, and concluded by saying that he was a German, but that he was more of an American. Some of the democratic candidates think that Ganong minht as well have run independent for all the good he is doing them or the ticket. Starkweather did'nt make any votes by stealing the democratic meeting at Paik Place on Monday night. The republicans of Mt. Pleasant listened to a couple of good sieeches at Partlow'a hall on Tuesday evening. The paers of this city are to be coin mended for abstaining from dirty politics this year, and to none is more credit due than to the publishers of the Herald who in order to do fo have had to stand i iff the importunities and demands of their own party. No one can appreciate the trying position in which thev have lieen placed who does not know the un just and unreasonable demands umde by pI)U''H' leaders. It is a boast of such populists as John Everhart that a nun does not need to know law to fill certain of the legal offices, but people like Everhart not only do not know law but are too ego tistic to listen to advice or reason. Such men get set in their opinion and are too hull headed to listen to common sense. They possess a capacity for evil in posi tion of trust greater than the money which they are required to expend. Leading populists here virtually con cede that they are making a fight simply for the offices and that if they fail to get these internal dissensions will cause the party to go to smash. Such reformers as Starkweather and Hankins will then have to look up gome new hobby to ride. JuBt what visionary scheme they will conclude to try and ride into power then would be hard to guess. Several of the judges and clerks of election as given in the Emtkkpkisk will have to abstain from serving and permit others to be chosen in their places as under the law no person who is an in terested party, that is, a candidate, can serve as a judge or clerk of election. Republican voters who are inclined to support the populist legislative ticket should stop and ask themselves what they personally have to gain by the election of suck men as Starkweather and Casto? With a populist legislature intelligent people -all over the United States would conclude that laws averse to capital and progress would be passed. The state would be shunned, capital by a social time at whirl, ice cteam was cemcwy 10 served.
