Mr. Hayes in arguing this matter before the court took the ground that not only might the taxpayer be accommodated in this matter but in so doing the county would not be the loser. Commissioner R. Scott reported hav ing expended the sum of $28.95 in aid of Mrs. McAllister and the clerk was au- How It Was Refore. See how it was when the democr4tie party was in power in years long ago. The following is from the New York Tribune of Januarv, 1855: On Saturday we spent an hour there (Orange and Chatham streets, where charity gave dinners to the poor) at the hour of high tide. We have never seen anything like it before. Upward of 1,000 people were fed with a plate of ' soup, a piece of bread and m piece of meat on the premise, and in alt more than 1,600. On tbe same day 1,130 poriions of soup were dealt out from Stewart's "soup kitchen" in tbe rear of the great store, corner Reade street and Broadway . At the rooms on Duane street for the relief of the poor on the tame day they gave feed to 2,25S. In the Sixth ward alone over 6,000 per sons were fed by charity on Saturday, January 16. And this is only one day in one ward. Meanwhile scenes of a like nature are being enacted all over tbe city. A procession of several thou sand persons kept marching about the streets vesterday with flags and banners which bore such inscriptions as, "Hun ger is a Sharp Thorn," "Tbe Last Re source," "Live and Let Live," "We Want Work," etc., etc. Such are the scenes that are being enacted daily be fore our eyes, while the cry of bard! time reaches us from every part of the country. Tbe makingof roads is stopped factories are closed and houses and ships are no longer being built. Factory hands, roadmakers, carpenters, brick layers, and laborers are idle. Paralysis is rapidly embracing everv pursuit in the country. The cause of all this stop page of circulation is found in the steady flow of gold to pay foreign laborers for the cloth, the shoes, tbe iron and tbe other things that could be produced by American labor, which cannot be produced nnder our present revenue system. If it be not stopped (the demo cratic revenue-only tariff system) we shall see tens of thousands of men every where crying: '-'Give me work. Only give me work. Make your own terms. My wife and children have nothing to eaL" Children who are puny, pale, weak, or scrofulous, ought to take Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. That builds up both their flesh and their strength. For this, and for purifying tbe blood, there's nothing in all medicine that can equal the "Discovery." In recovering from "Grippe" or in con valescence from pneumonia, fevers, or other wasting diseases, it speedily and surely invigorates and builds up the whole system. As an appetizing, re storative tonic, it seta at work all the processes of digestion and nutrition, rouses every organ into natural action. and brings back healt.i and strength. For all diseases caused by a torpid liver or impure blood, Dyspepsia, Bil iousness, Scrofulous, Skin, and Scalp Diseases even Consumption (or Lung scrofula)in its earlier stages the "Dis covery ' is the only guaranteed remedy. If it doesn't benefit or cure, in every case, you have your money back. Live Leisurely is good advice, but live carefully is better. In both cases Simmons Liver Regulator will help you live best. It keeps the liver active, the bowels regular, ' and helps throw off the poison in the system which causes Malaria and Rheu matism. The Regulator also promotes digestion, and never fails to relieve the most severe cases of Dyspepsia, Consti pation and Biliousness. "The flowers that bloom in the spring' are not more vigorous than are those persons who purify their blood with Ayer's Sarsaparilla. The fabled I lixer Vine could scarcely impart greater vi vacity to tbe countenace than this won derful medicine. Main Street Assessment. Notice is hereby given that tbe balance of the assessment for the im provement ot Main street has been or dered paid by the city council of Oregon City and that if the same is not paid by June 15, 1894, a warrant will be issued for the collection of the same. L. L. Pobteb, Recorder of Oregon Ciiy, Or. May 2, 1894.
