F. RYAN, Clerk. BOABD OF DiaKCTOB 8 REPORT. To the Taxpayers of District Xo. 62, the undersigned Directors, beg leave to sub mit the following annual report: In accordance with the instructions givuns at the last annual meeting the board proceeded to the erection of a school house on the Seventh street prop erty, Plans were adopted, bids duly advertised for and the contract finally awarded to Thos. Wilson & Co.. for $8078, and the building was completed for that sum, with the only additional charge of $91.50 for extra concrete in foundation wall. Thus the entire expense of the work including plans, specifications and the architects percentage waa kept within the $9000 to which we were limited. Pending the construction of the house, $0000 of bonds were negotiated at par bearing Interest at 6 per cent, this amount with the money on land has paid all the expense ot the new building, and we congratulate the district in having securred at a very reasonable coat a superior school house, commanding an attractive outside appearance, pleasant roomy and convenient in the interior. Our schools opened on the 2d of Octo $2192 38 2000 00 : 10UOOO We will venture to add here thatonr ' 00 ; schools are growing in importance and require much more attention from the board of directors than in the past, more time indeed than moot directors have to spare and many matters corn . np that are perplexing as well as an noying, but the directors have to meet them juH the same, an J since they do not get anything for their services they should at least be free from unfair criti cism. Permit me here, as retiring memb er, to bespeak for the board with the new member, whoever be may be, yonr hearty consideration and support. For the statistics of the schools we beg to refer you to the report of the prin cipal. As we were unable to levy any tax last year, the annual meeting author ized the board to borrow sufficient money to carry on the schools for the year. .Under this order the board have in curred debts to the amount of $3167. Had we raised the usual tax last year we would bave had no floating debt, but a balance on hand. For the details of financial matters we beg to refer you to the clerk's report. Inasmuch aa the tax voted at the special meeting is insufficient to main tain the schools for the entire year we recommend that this meeting authorize the board to borrow enough to make np the deficiency. In view of the fact tbat we now have two school bouses, we suggest tbat this meeting give to each of them some appro priate name, something that will be more euphonious thau the mere name of a street ; give them each a name that will awaken recollections of some who have passed on before us but whose memories we delight to honor. To this end we would recommend that the old . school be called the Barclay school in honor of Dr. Barclay, a pioneer of pioneers, a man of sterling worth and integrity, full of public spirit, but especial interested in our public schools. In like manner wa recommend that the new achool be named the Easthaui in memory of the late E. L. Eastharu, not a pioneer but native born, in early life a teacher of schools, always deeply interested in school work and in addi tion one who did more to arouse the dor mant energies of Oregon City and develop the latent powers of the Willamette Fulls than all his predecessors combined. Let then these two schools stand and he known as the monuments of Dr. Foioes Barclay and Edward L. Eastham. II. L. Kelly, G. Wm, Giboney, T. S. Lawrence, Directors-,, principal's report. To tub Board of Directors: Gentlemen In compliance with, a custom of the past, I have the honor of submitting the following report of the condition and progress of the public schools of Oregon City, as shown by the enrollment, attendance and punctuality of pupils. The whole number of pupils registered during the school year ending February 23, 1894, was 723 or 75 per cent of the entire number in the district of school concluded on sixth page.
