HANDLING CELERY. A Flan Suggested by Professor Ami of tae Ohio l-.s penmen Station, When the celery plants ar larpa enough for handling or firming, this iay he done either in the old war, by gl rawing soil around the bane of each j'laut, or winding a string ouce around I1IUJXO CTIIRY. each, a recommended by Professor Green. Here is what he aays about it iu manual on celery culturepublished by the Rural Publishing companr, Xew York: In handling we tried string by wind ing ouce around each plant and then go ing on to the text, keeping the string taut enough to hold the stalks In place. This was a decided improvement over the way of holding the stalks in place by earth until the rest of the soil was put in, but when it came to taking the string off the soil would be tramped around the plants, and the leaves and upper part of the stalks wonld be torn off. Some one thought that pajier string might do, and it would rot off and not hurt the ulnnL We nnt It nn . i era! thousand plants and found that Tery little injury was done, and this happened by the careless putting on of the string. The plants were held in po sition by the string until a rain came and settled the dirt around the plant and wet the string enough so it would give w-ay to the growing plant. To ome of the plants we gave a second bunking: before the fltnni? pavft wav And let the plant spread. Ve invented a iinie device tor putting the stnng on. I took a tomato can and punched a hole throngh the bottom of it, nailed it to stick, and then taking a piece of sus pender with the buckles fastened it to the right arm above the elbow and at ine wnsi, letting tne stnng rnn out at the bottom of the can between the thumb and front finger. With this ono can wind celery all day. The final blanching may be done with boards, and these need not beexcessively wide either. Covering Haystacks. Much hay is lost annually, even on well constructed haystacks. It is often difficult to get good wild grass to top out stacks, and timothy and clover make a poor covering to a stack. Numbered with various devices for cavering stacks is the one here depicted and thus de scribed in The Country Gentleman by an Ohio farmer: Use good, clear 13 inch pine lumber, which paint on one side.
