Tho work of making up the assess ment roll of the several counties, and es pecially of a county as largo and popu lous as Clackamas, has been a big and dillienlt undertaking this year on account of the new laws passed by the last legis lature requiring the assessor to carry out the proHrty of the several school and road districts in separate columns. As there was no basis for this work, and as many property owners were not certain as to which district their property was in, and all non-residents had lo be lo cated from the plats, it made much extra work. Assessor Bradley, ably assisted by his wife, has just completed the as sessment mil for this county, having carefully compared all property concern ing which there was any doubt with the plats on file in the county offices to in sure the correctness of the records. The book is fully as large as the roll of last year including the mortgages, and txtth Mr. Bradley and his wife are entitled to credit fur completing the roll with all the work involved as soon as they have. As the state board of equalisation does not met-1 tdl the first of December it is in plenty of time for their consideration, and until they do pass upon it nothing can be done towards making the levy oi col lecting the taxes. From the roll the following data has betn leathered : Gio s value of all property Iti.OtXl.S Exemptions 2S5.K0 Total value of taxable property 5,7!5,:tT2 Taxable property last year 3,tW'i,(M7 Increase over last year 1,8M,350 J. Driggs who recently passed the examination and was admitted to practice at the bar has ojened up an office in the building adjoining William's real estate office and Huntley's drug store and is prepared to attend to any legal business to wlikli he may be intrusted. As be has had considerable experience already in conducting cases and has met with jtood success in his efforts those who employ him may be certain that their business will be well and carefully done. as an evidence of the fair state of trade ia Oregon City in comparison with other places throughout the state there may be cited the success of E.J. McKit trick the shoe man who was caught some fourteen months ago with some debts and an overstock of goods. He has just paid off his debts and is once more in control of his own business, and while his stock is not as big as it was a year ago, It has still as finely selected an assortment as one oonld wish to see, and Mr. McKit tnck will be pleased to have all his for mer customers call and examine his goods. Most of the time of the court thns fur has been devoted to hearing motions and passing upon demurrs. The grand jury reported upon two cases on Thursday, and both parlies were permitted to plead guilty to as.-ault. One of these, K. This was the first i party given since the completion of the change in the armory and an effort was made to have the room well arranged and decorated for the occasion and that they were successful in this was evident from the many warm econiums spoken by the guests present. Special effort was made to have the reception room elegantly arranged and it would have bothered any one to have suggested any thing better or nicer. In fact it was elegant. The party was strictly devoted to dancing the music furnished by Rouse's or.-liestra being mu:h enjoyed as may best be understood from the fact that there were played in addition to the sixteen pieces on the program four extras. "Alter the ball" most of those present formed select sutpr par ties and went out to enjoy oysters and other delicacies.
