EDUCATIONAL NOTES All nolo for this column should bo nt to Mim Jennie liowen, eilitor, Cnhy, Oregon . Th punt moniii nun brought, nd the coming month trill brin to ninny, both pupila and teachers, their " first tiny ot school," nd, while I write, I have in mind especially thou young teacher who come from our countiy schools, go through our county institutes, mid from there Uke their places at the teacher's desk, m I did ten years sgo. I cannot find, as many do, that every ttiing depends upon this day's sticcecs or failure ; but 1 know it is oneof the import ant days of our lives. As teachers, we hope to do that which is best for our selves and our pupils, and very much of our success depends upon the manner in which we meet the pupils and patrons for the first time. There are few schools that will admit of the same treatment, yet there are many things that all people and places have in common. No. district, rich or poor, educated or uneducated, will be pleased with haughty, boisterous, self asserting ways in a teacher. Neither will they tolerate one who imitates in word or act that w hich belongs to an other. Each place needs a simple, hon est, decided individuality, and unless we are oiRSKLVis at first and always we cannot succeed as we should or would if we were. The new teacher is an experiment and is watched more closely than he will be attain . If she succeeds all her friends, interested or influanced, will say, "I knew she'd succeed . It's bom in her." If she fails, their tongues will as easilv turn the other way " I knew she'd fail ; ehe hasn't the first requisite of a good teacher." Teachers, if you succeed in any thing, the community and world aie ready lo dielp you on, and when you once get started going on is easy enough ; but if you step aside you w ill be crushed in a manner as rapid and harsh as in success you were kindly encouraged. I cannot outline your actions, and un less vou have made for yourselves char acter as you grew to manhood and wo manhood, it were useless to suggest, for you could not, would not, follow. Noth ing influences character and that is what real teaching i like character. You teach not only by what you do and say, but by what vou are. I can, however, assist you in mapping out a little plan for the first day's work. First : Be prompt to the minute in call ing and dismissing school. Second: Begin doing something at once. Have something written on the board and set every one at work, fall out your advanced classes first and see where they belong and assign lessons while the rest are writing. Use no time in securing names, but begin with the classes as you have them on your temporary program. During the day the place, standing and names of most of the pupils can be learned, and by the beginning of the second day you can arrange a permanent program, and everything will be running as smoothly as well regulated machinery. Chauncey Barney began teaching the Oak Grove school, district No. 91 near Macksburg October 16. Fred Skirvin began teaching school in district No. 65 near Wilholt October 9. A. B.
