Wednesday to attend a meeting of the
regents of the State Agricultural College.

morning states that Senator Mitchell is
registered at the auditorium in that city.

hurrying to his side quickly removed
the sacks when it was found that his
leg was broken. He was at once brought
over to Dr. Carll's otllee where the frac
ture was reduced and the patient made
as comfortable as possible.

The populists will start a paper in this
city under the editorial management of
H. L. Gill who has lately been editing
the Iron Worker. Mr. Ross of Portland
will be associated with Mr. Gill in the
management of the new paper which is
to be known as the Herald. The first

of the land offiice was in the city Thurs
day looking over the scene of bis future

J. P. Robertson of Salem was in the
city on Tuesday calling on Senator Cross
who stopped with him while in Salem
last winter.
John Yegeliusand family have gone to
Long Beach where all but John will re
main for the summer. He expects to re
turn on Saturday.
Mrs. H. E. Cross and family have
gone to the lower Columbia where she
will rusticate for a while and visit with
friends at Lower Beaver.
Miss Addie Pusey who has been visit
ing her sister, Mrs. W. P. Hawlev, for
the past few week, returned to her home
at Stockton last Friday night.
Tuesday's Statesman notes that Coun-
cilnien O'Connell and Randall of Ore
gon City were among the base ball en
thusiasts at Sunday's game in Salem.
H. J. Livermore who has been over
in Washington operating a phonograph
returned the last of the week and will
likely remain here till about the first of
September.
Misses Matilda Gurnett and Minnie
Griffith left Sunday for California after
a month's visit in this city where they
formed many acquaintances who will be
pleased to have them repeat the visit.

The circus has come and gone It
succeeded in attracting a large crowd to
town and there was a very fail attend
ance at the two performances. The few
animals including one big and a very
small baby elephant were good enough,
but there was hardly enough to call it a
menagerie. The circus part was ordi
nary with perhaps the exception of some
of the riding.

a new law firm which is to oen office
in both Oregon City and Portland The

of this city, Hon. J. T. Gregg of Sal.un.
and Judge Peter Ward, late of Indiana,
are all eminently fitted to attract a large

Judge J. B. Cleland and family, Col.
W.A.Cleland and Mrs. Harrison of
Portland were in Oregon City Wednes
day evening enjoying the scenery and a
picnic lunch in one of the inviting groves
on the hill w here they could look out
on the Falls of the Willamette.
One of the young deputy sheriffs ap
pointed to serve on Wednesday while
the circus was here made a revolver
serve him as a badge and also ticket to
the concert at the close of the regular
show. Nothing succeeds like a little

H. L. Kelly who has been closely con
fined at his place in the Bank of Oregon
City left on the Thursday morning train
lor Yaquina to take the steamer for
California for a two week's trip. He
expects to spend his time while in Cali
fornia traveling about over the state.
F. E. Palmer and wife left yesterday
forBandon, on Coos Bay, where Mr.
Palmer has arranged to assist in estab
lishing a woolen mill in which he will
have an interest. They have made
many friends in this community who
were very sorry to see them leave, and
regretted the necessity which compelled
them to go elsewhere to seek a business.
Mr. Palmer thoroughly understands the
business, having been with the Salem
mills before they burned down and since I
that time has been with the mills here,
s period of about 15 years. Bandon can
be assured of the success of the enter
prise with such a gentleman interested.
W. T. Whitlock, who has been for
some two months stopping up the Kun-
tiam in the vicinity of Green Basin was
down the past week. He has taken up
a homestead and may henceforth be
looked upon as a rancher.
Miss Azalie Cochrane began her duties
as stenographer for the Willamette Falls
Electric Railway company last Monday
and is nt work in the company's new
offices.
St. Paul's Sundiy school was treated
to a free ride down to view the Mon
terey on Tuesday and were afterwards
taken to the park at Portland for a picnic,
