(lanongand W. H. Welch arrested Bob
Young at Oswego for the attempt to
murder the Chinaman, Hun, and he was
brought up here and lodged in the city jail
till Saturday w hen after a hearing before
the deputy district attorney, C. II. Dye it
was found that ho could establish an alibi
and he was released. It wus claimed
that his actions wure most suspicious

Jacksonville, Or., July 18. Colonel
Holsirt A. Miller returned yesterday
morning from bis three-month's trip to
Washington city, and found his coin-
mission as register of the land office at
Oregon City, awaiting hitu. lie met a
very cordial reception from his many
Southern Oregon friends, and wh'le tne
opinion is general that his services to
the democratic party were entitled to
liettor recognition at the hands of the
administration, the Colonel accepts the
situation with his usual diplomacy and
good judgment and will perforin the
duties of the office honorably to hiniBelf
and creditably to his friends. He has
permanently closed bis law business
here and left tonight for Portland, going
from there to Oregon City to make ar
rangements to assume his new position
which he expects to do the 1st of August.
