Within the past few yearn tlit Lucre
tia and Uurtell's dew be trie have been
rather extensively advertised in nur
serymen's catalogues. But not all of
the testimony from those who have tried
them haa lieen favorable, thongb occa
sional report have been very flattering.
Professor Ooil considers BurtoU' dew
berry worthy of trial by till who are in
terested in tenting new fruit. Mr. H.
C. Adama, of Wisconsin, whoia an ex
tensive grower of blackberries, baa
found this variety more profitable as a
market fruit than any blnckberries he
haa grown. The accompanying ill nstra
tion is made from a specimen taken
after the height nf the fruiting season
had passed. It would not have been
difficult to have found larger fruits and
much larger clusters at an earlier date.
The, fact that the dewberry i pros
trate in it habit of growth is a decided
objection to it in climates where winter
protection is unnecessary. But in re
gions of severe winters the earn with
which the plants may tie covered is a
partial recompense for this fanlt. It in
said that a plantation once started is
eradicated from the soil with consider
able difficulty, which, if true, is an ad
ditional objection to the plant in culti

It Is of course no easy task to charge
thete sluggish conditions aud shifting
fortune of agriculture to any certain
cause; but. In searching for a solution,
certain fact appear with such cousplcu
on prominence as to makt them worthy
of men ttun, via., that with the same
physical condition, the same market
and unchanged price of farm produce,
tht American farm hna in late years
substantially declined In market value;
that the value ot farm produce In a
given locality Is, in general, deter
mined by tht price offered in the lo
cal market; that the farmer pays the
same for all that he bnys and got no
more for what ho sells, whether hi
farm be near or distant from the

thut au ainaxiug share of this cost is
made up by tht difRcnltit of wagon
road transportation, necessitating scant
loads, long di'lnys, mud blockade, break
downs aud extra trii; that thus or
similar hamiM-rlng conditions are tol
erated by no other Industrial class
within the nation, and finally that the
quickening means for work, travel and
transportation adopted within and be
tween the mercantile Industrie of the
different towns have added to the at
tractiveness and profit of these pursuit,
and by force of contrast have detracted
from the commercial value of neighbor
ing farms.
Dut the public roads, though placed,
for some obscure reason, within the im
mediate care of the farming population,
have a paramount importance to the peo
ple at large, to whom indeed they lq
fact belong, The common road is an in
stitution of the body politic, and it is
sorry comment to say thut the govern
ment has thus fur denied to its improve
ment the same liberal support tnat it
has showered upon the schemes of pri
vate capital.
The great volume of internal trade In
every state is the common road trade. It
exceuda by countless tons the entire
freight tonnage of all the railroads com
bined; for besides this freight, which is
at first carted in one form or another
over the public road, there is a still
greater quantity of produce of all kinds
wheeled over these roads to fill th de
mands of the local market and-to satisfy
tli requirements of home consumption.
The cost of this f orm of transjiortatlon,
be it great or small, is in the end paid,
in part at loast, by the consumer.
The time has certainly come when this
subtle and too long unrecognized effect
wbioh our great network of dirt roads
exerts upon the social and industrial
character of the people should be made
subject of popular concern, . As a na
