Our shoddy mill is once more in operation having been pur chased by J. Finn of Portladd. The prospects are favorable for better roads. Our road supervisor, Mr. R. The chair an nounced that the call still had hut one name, but no one responding the chair pro ceeded to appoint the committee, naming Messrs. Thompson , Hair and t'gleshy. A'lout this time there seemed to be con siderable confusion and thecliair demanded more signatures as the p.ter was now ready anil waiting. Mr. Gribble seemed in doubt as to whether the motion for a coinmilt bad carried, and called lor a division of the house. Here the chair again announced that the paper still had but one signature. Mr. Matthews then took the floor and said that he wanted to organize a people's party and had no ue for a committee. Whereupon thecliair emphatically insisted that there must lie more signatures to the call in order that Mr. Matthews could ac complish his object. About this time Mr. Matthews seemed to realize that he dad made a mistake and got into the wrong pew, and said that a motion to adjourn would be in order. Thereunjn the chair informed him that there was s.ill but one name signed to thecall. Albert Gribble moved to adjourn and the motion prevailed. Great enthusiasm was manifested hy the members of the two old parties present. The chair announced on adjourning the meeting that there was stilt only one signa ture to the paper. D. K. M. t News from Highland. Highland, April hi. Grim deaih has again visited our neighborhood and claimed lor its victim Mrs. Mary Jones, wile of Thomas B. Jones. Mrs. Jones was stricken with paralysis Tuesday, April 12, while sit ting in her chair. She as tirty-three years of age and leaves a husband and seven chil dren and a number of grand children to mourn her loss. Her remains were interred Bernhard Quant, returned home Tuesdav after sending about two weeks with his father. He returns witlif i good impression of C'regon. J. W. Noble our comity assessor visited us last week. Easter services were held at at. John's church. The decorations were tasteful and an interesting program was rendered by the young folks of the church. The attendance was large. Mr. T. R. A. Scll wood preached in the absence of Rev. John Sellwood who was too feeble to attend. Mr. and Mrs. R. Scott gave a very en joyable party at their home Tuesday even ing. Dancing and games were indulged in by all until a late hour when a bountiful supir was served. There was vocal and instrumental music and pleasant social intercourse to speed the hours away. Among those present were Misses Stark weather, A. W ilson, A. Rogers, M. Rogers, Hattie and Dora Bonnett. School will close in this district (No. 51) this week. Mr. Neal Stup has taught a three-mouths term.
