TIIK I.KIIISUTIVR OKKICKS. For stale senator, (ieo. C. Brownell, John (i. l'ilsbnry and Gordon tt. Hayes of Oregon City, W. B. Marye of liar low, G. W . l'rosser of Osweuo, and John W, l'abnaieer of Garfield were put in nomination. In a felicitous speech Brownell declined the nomination on tlie ground that be was a comparatively new man in the district, and lie warmly and eloquently seconded the nomination of Haves, l'rosser also declined to stand for the nomination. Brosser and A. Mutiier worn appointed tellers and a mo tion was adopted directing: that the vote lie taken as the secretary called the roll of 'delegates by precinctB. Brownell's name was rend in the list of those to be voted for but be insisted on withdrawing though there were ob jecting voices on all sides. KiniiHv the chair, in view of the popular de mand for Brownell asked him if, in case he were chosen, he would servo. To this he emphatically responded that ho would not; that his declination was in good faith and ho would on no consid eration accept tlie nomination. This settled it and the ballot for the other four proceeded, resulting In the choice of Hayes, who received seventy-two of the 110 votes cast, lie was culled bp fore the convention and expressed his thanks In a neat speech. tot representatives Joel 1', Goer of rieasitnt Hill, James M. Dunn, of Went Sido, Arthur Winches f Needy, H, A. D. Gurley of Candy. H, G. Starkweather of Milwaiiklo, II. F. Gibson of Clackamas and George L. Story of Oregon City were put in nomination, On tde tint ballot Gurley dud forty voti,Starkweather four teen, Nelson nine, Winches five and Dunn two. Nelson, Winches and Dunn withdrew after the first ballot, the two (miner naming Gibson ks their prefer ence. Dr. Hiii' tli, who bail placed Gili son In nomination, put in a telling speech for bis candidate at this juncture and the second ballot gave 1 Gibson seventy, Gurley thirty-nine and Stark weather two. Gibson was declared the nominee and he appeared and thanked the convention. tiidiiey Smyth of Oregon City was nominated for surveyor by acclamation, theie being no opposition, and he ex pressed bis appreciation of the honor. For county commissioner a lot of names were wut in nomination. There weie James Winston of Damascus, Jacob Miley of Union, F. M. Osliurn of Damascus, George liandull of New Era, A. G. Walling of Oswego, II. B. Chase of CiiHcades.C. Moelinke of BeaverCreck, Herman Bruns of Cascades, and II Dubois of Springwater. On the first ballot Walling received twenty-nine votes, , Scott twenty-four Duliois twenty-one, Miley eleven, Wins ton :ilne and the others five or less each. On the second ballot Walling got forty-six, Scott thirty-three Duliois trnteen and the others less than six each. The third ballot gave the nomina tion to Scott who received fifty-eight to Walling's filty-three. The treasurysbip nomination was de cided on the first ballot when J. O. Wetheiell of Caneuiiih received sixty three votes, J. N. Harrington of Ely ; llfteen, N. M. Missly of Molalla twelve, 'andM. E. Willotighby of Oregon City nine. In the next vote eight changed from Kruse to j Bams) y thus giving the latter sixty-one I and nominating him. This povoked hearty applause and Iiamsby had to appear with a little speech which was cordially received, Then came tlie clerkship. Hoots nom j iustcd Alex. Thomson of Clackamas, Wolfer iwied G . F. llorton of Needy, Pickens proK-ied W. T. Whitlock of Ore go'l City, Paquet grew eloquent in pre senting the name of L. L. Porter of Ore gon City and Kocher brought forward Henry Meldrum. On tho first ballot llorton got thirty-two, Meldrum, twenty six, Porter twenty-t'.iree, Thomsoli twen-ty-threo. and Whitlock nine. The second ballot gave llorton forty-two, Meldrum, twenty-seven, Porter twenty six and Whitlock two. Then the con tending forces broke. Whitlock with drew in favor of Meldrum, Thomas with drew in favor of llorton and in the com motion Meldrum got the recognition of tho cbnir and announced his withdrawal also in fvor of llorton. That settled it. The third ballot, which was then a mere matter of form, gave llorton eighty-one and Porter twenty-five. Horton thanked the convention, a motion to adjourn was lost on a division of the house and the work proceeded. F'otir names wore proposed for sheriff. W, H. Smith of Park Place was nomi nated by Captain Apiorson, E. C. Mud doek of New Era by Cbas. Foster, A. B. Marquatn of Marquatn by Samuel IrotiB and V. V. H. Samson by T. J. Jons- ruJ. Mr. Jonsrud had been making ir relevant remarks during the session and caused considerable amusement but when Samson's name was proposed bv him it was greeted with hisses from all parts of the house. Mad dock was nom inated on the first ballot, receiving fifty six votes. Smith got twenty-four, Mar quani twenty and Samson eight. Forty nominations were made. It took more than an hour for the tellers to count the votes cast and but for the circumstance that the rules had been suspended so as to declare the ton high est on the list elected they might be balloting yet. The following were the successful ones: G. W. Pressor of OBwego eighty votos, Geo. C. Brownell of Oregon City seventy-seven, Frank Jagger of Beaver Creek Beventy-flve, II. II. Johnson of Oregon City. There had been no adjournment for supper, although two or three attempts had been made, and everybody was tired and hungry. The secretaries had grown hoarse calling the roll and were in danger of an attack of writer's cramp. So there was no differ culty in carrying a motion to adjourn this time The county central com mittee however, held a meeting and or ganized by electing Geo. C. Brownell chairman and J. 0. Wetherell secretary. Late as it was the crowd insisted on a speech from Brownell, in fact he had been called for three or four times dur ing the afternoon and evening.
