Walden is in fuvor of improving six roads leading to Oregon City; the j Maniniiii and Mohtlla road, the one ! coming dow n the Willamette hii. I the I ami the one Ibis aide ol the Clackamas i on the cunt aide; and the road to 111 nlu... 1 Hiit, the one from up the river ami the lone (ruin down the river on the went aide. I le Ix-lievi-a that road taxea should ; lie lolltvtnl in ciiah ami the exiemli- tures made under the direction ol coinjie ' tent englneera. 1'inlnct rottd Hiiix-rvlitors as a general tiling do not umlc Miami the busineaa of roml huiMing and money that t iey use Is little more than thrown away. All work should be done by con tract ami under the siiiervision of some competent and responsible engineers. Captain I'ratt, of tlio locks, wunts good roads though he has nut then much thought to Ihu manner of gelling them, lie thinks i lie roads on the west side as a rule U'tter Hum those on the east side ol the river. He ia con vinced that good roada lo the county seat would greatly increase the hnpur (unco of Oregon City as a shipping point and thinks the matter ia word) making a big ellou for Councilman J. W. O'Connell aaya he Is'lievea in good roadr hut he also be lieves that thu people of the whole county should pay for them. The great weakness In the method of dealing with the roads that baa prevailed heretofore has been in the necessity, under the law, of placing the supervision of road work in the hands of srsons unskilled in the business. It required a smcial knowl edge of that kind of work to equip one (or building roads satisfactorily and it was simply useless to thtow away money aa it had been done in this county. Mr, O'Connell thinks the plan outlined in the FsrsurnisK good one. However, he is of tho opinion that the board ol trado should pay tho portion due (roiu this city from lta treasury rather than circulate a subscription paper. Grocer K. K. Williama thinks the plana already begun a good one. He says he don't believe In throwing away money on viaionary schemes but he la willing to put up his share to pay for the preliminary work involved In the present project. Th Twimoht Symi'uony Ci-ud. A doaun young people, more or less, have organised the Twilight Symphony club which mceta every Saturday evening for practice. As may be inferred from the name the energies of the club are devoted to music culture, both instrumental and vocal. Ability to read written music disqualifies one for mem bership in the club, but those who have a soul for melodious strains, who arc moved by concord ol sweet sounds and w ho are inspired warblers will feel en tirely at home in tho Twilight Symphony club. 'When tho season gets far enough advanced so that all the members catch cold in their voices they propose doing some serenading, liy the tinio next spring that the frogs start to sing the Symphony club will have up to its blood and the ravishing strains that will bur den tho air will mako us all wish we wore there, very there. Ciiiustmas Thick Social The people ol Canonitth are holding a eerios of socials to raise money for a gorgeous Chiislmas tree with which to astonish tho youthful members of that community.
