workmen to procure employment i
causing most acute distre. Six thous
and have been thrown out of employ
ment by the many stoppage of work,
and a large numtier of them have earned
nothing for vear. The outlook for the
coming winter i gloomy. Hundreds of
families near the iron work are on the
verge of starvation. So serious has the
situation become that the authorities
have decided to start public work to
give employment to the many idle men
in the district, and thus avert the famine
which is threatened.

lor, a farmer, returned to hi home near

at San Bruno, and with a pick handle,

injured his 8-year-old son with the same
weapon. The woman and child were
found by the noignbors lying unconscious
in a pool of blood. Tho woman's skull

mite was stored. This exploited and
started fires iu blocks awav lo the north
west. The sound was not neiru, out
the effect of Ihe explosion was felt fifty
miles away. In ihe city the effect was
stunning. Many fell in the streets and
many were injured, Plate glass for four
or five squares was shattered, and the
sidewalks weie covered with broken
glass.
The firemen could have stopped the
fire at this point but for the explosion
which rendered them almost helpless.
Residences, stores and hotels broke into
flames and the fire became a terrible
conflagration, and was not stopped until
after daylight. The total number of
buildings of all kinds burned is fifty-five,

now. It will be very small, compared

CROP.
There is a serious lack of harvest
hand in most sections. Heading and
threshing are in full progress. The
w beat is turning out above even the ex
pectation of most farmers. Prices today
in Pendleton for wheat are 65 cent for
blue stem and 64 cent for club, clear of
the sack ; many farmers in this section
wild their wheat last year at from 62 to
64 cents per bushel. In Sherman nnd
Morrow counties, the yield is most sat
isfactory, also in parts of Wasco county.
In Union county some heading wae done
the past week, but it w ill be in full opera
tion next week. Iu Klamath county,
which appears to be a natural county
for tye, there is rye eight feet high and
volunteer oats that will yield nearly or
quite 50 bushels per acre. Througb the
stock country a large hay crop was se
cured and stock are generally in prime
condition. This year promises the best
all around harvest on record in Oregon.
