According to the usual practice rec
ommended, seed should be kept dry
from harvest to planting time, but the
opposite condition is desirable in pre
serving the viability of wild rice, says
the United States Department of Agri
culture in Circular 229, Wild Rice,
prepared by Charles E. Chambliss.
For this reason, in buying seed it Is
Important that tlie purchase be made
from a dealer who guarantees that It
has been, stored under the right con
ditions. Use for Wild Rice.
The principal use of wild rice Is as
feed for wild ducks and other water

fowl, but It Is also used to a limited
extent as human food, particularly by
some of the Indian tribes of the upper
Mississippi valley. Because It attracts
game birds it is sown on hunting pre
serves, the sowers going out In row
boats or canoes and spreading the seed
over the water by handfuls. Mature
seed is heavy and will sink Immedi
ately to the bottom and become im
bedded in the mud. Spring sowing is
the most satisfactory as seed that is
sown in the fall is likely to be con
sumed by hungry ducks or geese.
The natural range of wild rice in
North America extends southward
from the northern end of Lake Winni
peg to the Gulf of Mexico and eastward
to the Atlantic coast throughout these
latitudes. In the northern part of this
region it grows mainly In shallow lakes
and sluggish streams, while in the
eastern and southern part of the Unit
ed States It thrives above brackish wa
ter on low marshes bordering most of
the tidal rivers.
Wild rice may be started In beds and
then transplanted. This method of
getting a stand started in a location
where the crop does not grow natural
ly Is described In the circular.
Manner of Harvesting.
For centuries the Indians of Minne
sota, Wisconsin and Canada have har
vested this crop by going out In canoes
and shaking or knocknig the ripe seeds
Into the boat. The white man, with all
his Ingenuity, employs the same meth,
od and probably will continue to do so
until the plant is brought under culti
vation. The Department of Agricul
ture is investigating the possibilities in
the growing of the plant and in the cir
cular reports that it is a good food and
that it has a possible value as forage.
Very little of the grain ever gets on
the markets, as the Indians sell only
the small surplus they may have occa
sionally. Copies ot the circular may be ob

The proper stage at which to har
vest the silage crop Is an important
question. Cutting too green sacrifices
too much growth and feed value and
makes acid silage; cutting too late
causes poor packing and spoilage. A
good rule in harvesting Indian corn
for silage Is to cut just before the ker
nel glazes, and In Ae case of Dent
varieties, after the dent is well formed.

being a failure doubtless arise from
the fact that we read in the news
papers from time to time, that certain
so-called co-operative enterprises , have-
fallen into bankruptcy.
But the failure of a so-called co
operative concern is quite a different
thing from the failure of co-operation.
For the fact is that co-operation
never has failed and never will fail
and never can fall.
The only thing that fails is the lack
of co-operation.
Without co-operation the world
would be a Howling Wilderness."

The only success that straight-forward
business ever attained, any
where, at any time was gained through
some degree of co-operation. -.
Where the workers are well paid and

whenever a business fails or lags, it
does so because of lack of co-operation.

Co-operation Is the method whereby
two or more people may do what needs
to be done, whereby they may accom
plish some worthy end."
In the degree that they succeed, in
that degree have they used co-operation;
and in the degree that they fail,
in that degree they have failed to use
co-operation.
