HOMEMAKERS' CONFERENCE
WILL SOUND NEW SLOGAN
"Better homes for Oregon" is the
new slogan around which the prac
tical scientists and scientific pnac
ticers of Oregon home-making will
rally for their first separate confer
ence at the state college, Corvallis,
March 20-25.
"And the slogan will be made vital,"
say the leaders of the movement "The
opening address of Dean Ava B. Mi
lam, 'Homemaking From a new Stand
point' will sound the keynote."-
The conference has always hereto
fore been held in connection with Far
mers' week, when some of the wo
men thought they were expected to
play "second fiddle" in the men's or
chestra. In conformity with the de
velopment "fua better standard of
homes and iioniemaking, the method
has been changed to meet the new
needs. O. As C. Experiment station
Grain Ration for Cows.
The most economical grain ration
to feed dairy cows along with com
mon home-grown roughage, is com
posed of corn, 300 pounds, mill run
240 pounds, and cotton seed meal.
100 pounds. Corn is relatively low
in price now as compared with barley
or oats. Cotton seed meal can be
replaced by flax seed if succulent or
laxative feeds are lacking in the ra
tion. O. A. C. Experiment station.,
Poison the Field Mic.
Many berry growers are reporting
trouble with mice that follow mole
holes to the base of the plants or even
make tunnels of their own. Both
moles and mice can be discouraged by
any system of cultivation that will
. tear out the ridge in the rows between
the plants. With black rasperries
check cultivating will do this, but with
trelised plants a grape hoe is best.
Mise can be poisoned easily by mix
ing 1 ounce strychnine (alkaloid)
one eighth ounce saccharine and 12
quarts oatmeal. Scatter it in holes
or runways. O. A. C. Experiment sta
tion.

Twigs Carry Powdery Mildew.
The new outbreaks of powdery mil
dew at the start of each season arise
from bud infections of the previous
year. Pruning out mildewed twigs
during the dormant period is a great
aid in the control of the disease. For
complete control this must be sup
plemented by spraying with lime sul
fur. The first mildew spray is the
same as for apple scab and is given
just as the cluster buds open enough
to expose the blossom bud3. Later
sprays are advised as for scab con
trol the pink, calyx and 15-day ap
plications. Spring and summer cut
ting of mildewed twigs is also advis
ed where the disease is troublesome.
