IHE BANNER-COURIER, OREGON CITY, OREGON, THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 1922. Page Seven- THE PEOPLE'S SAY Individualism vs. Collectlvness' Editor Banner-Courier: The principal of individualism has become so finely rooted in American life that it has become the fixed and settled way by which all have agreed to make their living in this country. We want to do as we please, go where and when we please, believe and say what we please, without any governmental authority directing our steps.- Acting on this principle from the earliest settlement of this coun try, it has become a part of our individual natures. The spirit of col lective action has little opportunity and poor soil for development or growth. Beautiful in theory, but an impossibility on American soil until such time when our country shall have reached that period in its on ward march in history where an un limited monarchy will be its political form. And that time, though far dis tant, will come, for history has the firm habit of repeating itself. It is true that we do many thinks in a collective way. We find that it is better on the average that edu cation should be in the hands of the state instead of the private individu al. This training of the mind to think somewhat alike is a natural function of government. And this nation being individualistic in princi ple, it is only natural tha tthe govern mental training should be that way. We cannot deny that under this sys tem vast fortunes have been accum ulated by some. That these same individuals try hard to keep from bear ing their equal and just share in the burdens of government i strue. The rights of private ownership of any thing and everything we can get a hold of is firmly framed and bred in us from generations back that we will fight and starve to preserve this principle. The pathway of endeav or to change this way of living is strewn with the wrecks of thousands Instead of giving a respectful hearing to some different theory, we strangle those who dare propose it. Being among those who believe that life is worth living and holding sacred any thing and rights of citizenship in the land of my birth, I shall henceforth be found among those who believe in the doctrines of the immortal Lin coln: "The republican party has more to its credit in its short history of 60 years than the democratic party from the days of Thomas Jefferson, 120 years ago. The American peo ple can get any kind of governing they want through the representative system. So cherishing all that is good and great in our American sys tem of government, let us work to kee pit truly a government of, by, and for the interests, as Lnncoln so nobly expressed it ROBERT GINTHER, Oregon City, Ore. t OF AB iWWTaTRAT-OP-S ALE OF REAL PROPERTY No. 19798 In the Matter of the Estate of David L.
