hereby given that subject to the con
ditions and limitations of the act of
June 9, 1916 (39 Stas., 218), and the
instructions of the Secretary of the
Interior of September IB, 1917, the
timber on the following lands will be
sold April 8, 1919, at 10 o'clock a.
m., at public auction at the United
States land office at Portland, Ore
gon, to the highest bidder at not
less than the appraised value as
shown by this notice, sale to be sub
ject to the approval of the Secretary

SERGEANT SCOTT RETURNS
TO THIS CITY FROM FRANCE
Sergeant Fred A. Scott, son of
Mrs. E. K. Gallinger, of this city, has
returned here. Sergeant Scott has
been training sergeant at Camp
Lewis. He resumed his position with
the Hawley Pulp & Paper company
here. Mr. Scott has also the dis
tinction of having a war baby at his
home and it has been honored with
the name of Jean. Sergeant Scott
was one of the young men from this
city who saw service on the Mexican
Wder. He 'left this country only a
few days before the armistice was
signed, and the ship was turned
back.

Word comes to this city that Lieu
tenant Hal Swafford has arrived
from France, and is now1 stationed at
Camp Merritt, New Jersey. He enter
ed the service and was assigned to
the the 18th Engineers Railway com
pany, but was later transferred to
another company. He is connected
with the supply department. Mr.
Swufford was married in this city
just before going overseas, and his
wife, formerly Miss Ivy Ford, is now
living here.
W. Kayser, road supervisor for the
county, had his Ford stolen Wednes
day night. The car has not been
found up to date, but officials here
aro on the lookout for the machine.
The car was taken from West Linn.
