ARE THE ANCIENT WRITS
RANK WORKS OF FICTION?
That the text of translations can
vary so greatly makes The Courier
believe that all these so-called war
prophecies are works of fiction,
based upon fact in no manner. The
following is supposed to be a trans
lation of exactly the same prophecy
as The Courier published on Decem
ber 13. Even the dates differ and in
spite of the recommendation the fol
lowing has received it is generally
branded as a fake.
As a key to the prophecy, which
is not even similar in subject matter
to the other alleged translation, it is
only necessary to know that the kais
er is a German Lutheran and that he
has a withered arm. Germany is the
black eagle, Austria, her ally, also
has an eagle. Russia is the white
eagle. France is the cock. England,
the British empire, is the leopard.
I he authenticity of this prophecy
was at first doubted because of a few
discrepancies in the text but the mat
ter was referred to the newspaper
information bureau at Washington,
and Director Frederick J. Hawkins
replied as follows:
"In reply to your letter askine
whether the prophecy by the monk,
iratre jonannes, is real, we would
say that this prophecy was discover
ed in old parchment in the convent of
the Holy Ghost, at Wismar, in Ger
many, and is kept under glass in the
town hall of this city. There have
been numerous translations which
text vary somewhat. The discren
ancies which we noted, and which you
also may notice, are probably due to
the variations in the translation of
the text. On the whole it is a re
markable prophecy. It is as follows:
ihe real antichrist will be one of
the monarchs of his time, a Luther
an Protestant. He will invoke God
and give himself out as his messen
ger, or apostle. This prince of lies
will swear by the Bible. He will
represent himself as the arm of t.h
I most high, sent to chastise corrupt
peoples,
He will have only one arm, but
nis innumerable armies, who will take
for their device the words, "God is
with us," will resemble the infernal
regions.
For a long time he will act by
craft and strategy. His spies will

HELL, Nov. 8 (To the Editor of

It is very seldom that we, the in

of his Satanic Majesty, condescend
to take notice of the petty affairs of
your mortal world. Once in every
thousand years or so, however, some
thing arises which is so damnably
false and libelous that we are com

In the issue of November 7 of
your paper (which, by the way, en

our best citizens of any periodical
which reaches us) there appears an
article under the heading, "Satan
Abdicates the Throne of Hell," which
purports to be a letter from His Sa
tanic Majesty to one Wilhelm von
Hohenzollern.
I myself, as Prime Minister of
Hell, brought this item to His Maj
esty's attention, and never in the
many thousands of years of my ex
perience have I seen him in such a
thundering rage. Had you been here,
sir, you would have thought that
hell had broken loose, indeed. '
When His Majesty's anger had
subsided sufficiently to permit him to

statement, which, in all justice. I

The Federal Farm Loan board an
nounced Saturday that it advocates
amendments to the farm loan act un
der which many private farm mort
gage bankers may enter the govern
ment system as joint stock land
banks. At the same time the board
also gave warning that it expects
those seeking to break down the sys
tem to file a suit soon to test the
consituionality of the act.
Amendments to the existing law
which will be specifically recom
mended to congress in the board's
forthcoming annual report are:
To remove the present restriction
permitting a joint stock land bank
to do business only in the state where
it is situated and one contiguous
state.
To permit a bank to issue bonds
to the amount of twenty times its
capital stock, which must be $250,
000 or more, instead of fifteen times,
as under existing law; and,
To raise from 6 to 0 per cent
the maximum interest rate which
joint stock land banks may charge
on loans to farmers.
Joint stock land banks would still
though the maximum were raised to
6V4 per cent. They also would have
to compete with the federal land
banks new rate of 5 Mi per cent.
In a statement today explaining
the financial condition of the federal
land banks, the farm loan board said:
"We are advised that the next
move of those who are seeking to
break down the system, will be to
institute a suit contesting the consti
utionality of the farm loan act. The
purpose of his suit will be to alarm
investors who have already bought
bonds, and to dissuade others from
buying them."
