CORRESPONDENCE (Continued from page 2) ed to Portland, where Mr. Read has secured employment. They have a fine ranch with a 20-acre orchard, but the lure of the city at big wages was too much. Oregon has two candidates for governor already in the field and probably more later. The two who Pub 3a. Aia iCiunoD ai ms ino ojf Starkweather, especially the demo crats. Stanfield, the republican, is a man the people of the state are proud of from the great struggle he made to achieve success. Sam Cox, working on the bridge above here on the Sandy river at the Brightwood school house, fell off the top into the river, but fortunately struck a deep hole and was not in jured. If he had struck the rocks on either side he would probably have been killed. Fred Beechill, who lives near Brightwood, has five acres of late po tatoes that are very good. He dug several that weighed three pounds and one that weighed nearly four pounds. He thinks he will have 400 sacks. Nearly everyone here signed the food pledges, although there is occas ionally one who is rather balky. The Hallowe'en entertainment was well attended and the program pass ed off pleasantly. Archie Averill returned home last Saturday from Portland for a week end visit at the bungalow. He has a difficult position to fill and one that a college-trained man fell down on. By all means let us have a govern or who is a friend to the farms and farmers and not a corporation owned tool like Withycombe with his endless repetitions of "Oh, my friends!" If the republicans must win let them put in a real man like Stanfield. But, of course the democrats prefer Starkweather. The rain of the last few days has been a welcome visitor to the farm ers in this neck of the woods. If a stranger' passed through our town he would think of the good boom days of long ago. It would seem that the people are getting so wealthy that they can retire or it may be something else, eh! The following persons were visit ors at Cedar Springs ranch last Sunday: Mr. and Mrs. James John son of Clackamas; Mr. and Mrs. J. Welch of the east side, and Charles Lischke of the south side. There will arise no multi-millionaire spud growers in this vicinity this year because of quality and quantity, regardless of price. So far the price is not very encourag ing. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Kelnhofer and sons spent Wednesday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Haberlach. Miss Emma Haberlach, who is in the hospital in Portland, is get ting along as well as could be ex pected and hopes to be home in a few days. Mrs. James Moore, who is in the hospital, is getting on as well as possible. 1 It is noised around that H. Klink- ey and family will soon move to the city to make their future home, as we hear they have rented their ranch and will take life a little more easily than in the past. We wish them good luck and lots of. it. Mrs. J. Enghouse was a visitor at the KelnKofer ranch last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. L. Kelnhofer and son were cruising around in the Carus country in search of apples last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. Welch and J. Enghouse attended the sale in Mount Pleasant last Saturday. Elsie Van Water, who is attend ing business college in Portland, was a home visitor last Sunday. We wish those fertilizer factory fellows in Portland would not be so slow in picking up the raw material for their factory as there is a chunk of it lying on west Main street. Dodds one day last week and, losing control, he was thrown from his buggy, alighting on his head and suffering painful injuries. At this writing he is much improved, fortunately meeting with no serious results. Mrs. Hoops from the Greenwood district, visited her sisters,' Mrs. bwick and Nash, last week. A potato digger, minus a lame back at fne close of the day gives strong indication of having accom plished but little. Most of our men folks attended the public auction at W. B. Frank Werner, a hard working man of this community, has pur chased a small tract of land near New Eva, which he will improve immediately for a future home. Miss Millie Peterson visited friends in Portland Sunday. Chaperoned by their teacher, Miss Miller, a number of our school chil dren celebrated Hallowe'en by a call at the Spiger residence, pre senting Mrs. Spiger, who has been ill for some time, with a large pumpkin filled with nuts and can dies. An extremely commendable diversion from the usual custom. A cow btlongintr to F. Weisen. beck recently gave birth to twin calves. What will Mount Pleasant say to this? are Mr. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Ellings visiting the former's parents. and Mrs. Paul Ellings. There is talk of reorganizing the Literary society for this winter. Tom Kelland has material on the ground for the construction of ce ment walks around his premises. Mr. Frank of Portland, has been making improvements on his prop erty in this vicinity the past week. LOGAN Twenty-five members were in at tendance at the November meeting of Harding Grange and all took a hand in singing "Old Glory'1 and in making things lively in discussing the timely theme of food conserva tion. It was the general under standing that food conservation does not mean, at present, short rations, but substitution of bulky, perishable articles for concentrated foods more suitable for shipping and handling in large quantities. There will be an entertainment and dance on November 24 for the benefit of the Red Cross fund and the committee reported that pro gress on the program and other ar rangements points toward success. Next meeting will be election day, so hustle out, all ye brave and fair Grangers, and put yourselves in a state of watchful waiting. While watching some recent stump blasting for Kirchem broth ers, Henry Huber was rendered un conscious for a while. About $40 was raised at the Low er Logan school entertainment and added to the building fund. A good entertainment is reported as having been held at the church last week, but the financial returns have not been given in. Some good potatoes have been dug according to reports, .aut they were too few in the hill to yield very well. City consumers say the minimum marketable potato seems to be very small this year so the writer has taken the Bob White quail egg as the standard. We hear that E. N. Barrett will probably move to a new location. E. C. Gerber has some chinamen picking up potatoes and an aged one, while riding on the foot board of the auto, fell off and died from injury or shock. Helen Babler has been out at the home place recuperating from a sick spell caused by ptomaine pois oning. The alleged lime swindlers struck Logan, but the time set for delivery is passed and no business done. There seems to be some dif ference of opinion as to "whether a swindle was intended. Mr. ,Werner had given $5.90 as the price at which he could furnish ground lime stone to a community , made-up car load order. He says the lime in ques tion is a good grade of concentrat ed lime, but should not cost over $8. If it was a good grade article, 95 per cent, as claimed, it should,. ac cording to the best expert advice the writer has been able to get, be worth at least twice as much as ground lime stone, which would make it $11.80, and $12.50 would only be 70 cents per ton to pay the agent for soliciting orders, making (Continued on' Page 8) Tirst national Bank of OREGON GITY Qapiial Stock Surplus - $50,000.00 $25,000.00 Member FEDERAL RESERVE BANK Member OREGON STATE BANKERS ASSOCIATION Member AMERICAN BANKERS ASSOCIATION Under Government Supervision U.
