PRICES FOR CATTLE RANGE
25 TO 55 CENTS HIGHER
Monday's receipts at the Portland
Union stockyards were 800 cattle,
1000 hogs, 400 sheep. .
The market in beef steers was act
ive, with prices ranging from 25 to
5 tents higher, which was the first
real upturn the market has had for
about a month. Buyers had to step
lively to get in at all on the supply,
which was sold out in the early
morning hours. All killers seem to
be in need of immediate supplies.
While there were no strictly fat
steers in the entire run, with the er
ception of one head at $10.50, they
are. quoting prime hard grass steers
from S1Q..25 to $10.50. Four loads of
very good California steers brought
$10.00, which sold about 25 cents
higher. Several loads of very good
yearling steers brought the biggest
advances for the day, most of which
sold 50 cents higher, with one sale
fully 55 cents higher. Sales on these
grades ranged from $8 to $9$. De
mand for killers did not seem to
want and prices were fully steady
with a week ago, and in many cases
25 cents higher, that is, on fat stuff.
The best cows sold from $8.25 to $8.
75, with a few choice heifers going
at $9. Thin dairy bred stuff, of which
there was quite a spread Monday, got
only steady bids. Prices ranged from
$5 to $7. There were only a few thin
bulls on the market, with very little
demand and steady prices. Best
heavy bulls sold from $7 to $7.75.
With the smallest Monday run of
hogs in years on the market, it did
not seem to have any effect on prices.
Alf the sellers could do was to get a
steady bid. Demand continues very
light. Several loads of prime hogs
brought $15.25 for the bulk of good
hogs. Packers were not willing to
give over $$1$5. Pigs and grass hogs
are still being cut very hard with the
bulk bringing $12.
Prices in the sheep house are from
25 to 75 cents lower than a week ago,
although there was a steady market
Monday. Good to choice spring
lambs are selling mostly at $13.50,
with culls from $11 to $12. Year
lings, wethers and ewes, especially
heavy ones were in for a trimming at
the close of the week, prices being
off 50 to 75 cents. The choice shorn
yearlings sold from $10.75 to $11,
with wethers from $10.25 to $10.50;
good to choice shorn ewes brought $9
to $9.50, with good heavy ewes from
$8.60 to $9. Culls are selling from
$5 to $7. Receipts of sheep the past
week, while not heavy, were of com
paratively god volume, but demand
was not very great.

Among the virtues of Lydia E.

SHERIFF POSTS ELIGIBLES
Careful Check is Being Made So No
Unjust Arrests Follow
The names of the 2647 men who
registered in Clackamas county under
the war census law were posted in
the court house corridors by Sheriff
W. J. Wilson Friday. Sheriff Wilson
is now checking over the names to
learn if very many registered in
wrong precincts. He discovered sev
eral such errors and will make a care
ful check before placing any men un

soon as the work of checking the
names is finished a vigorous campaign

NOT ENOUGH CHILDREN
ever receive the proper balance of food
to sufficiently nourish both body and
brain during the growing period when
nature's demands are greater than in
mature life. This is shown in so many
pale faces, lean bodies, frequent colds,
and lack of ambition.
For all such children we say with
unmistakable earnestness: They need
Scott's Emulsion, and need it now. It
possesses in concentrated form the very
food elements to eurich their blood. It
changes weakness to strength; it makes
them sturdy and strong. No alcohol.
