Notwithstanding the recent municipal legislation against them the jitney men are regularly hauling passengers from Portland, and delivering them either at West Linn or right here in Oregon City. The jitney ordinance, In spite of the fact that it has been upheld in all its severity by the supreme court of the state, is made fun of by the jit ney drivers. Last week signs appear ed on Main street and at other auspic ious places announcing that jitney service was maintained between West Linn and Portland, with cars leaving the west end of the suspension bridge every hour. In Portland the station of the Ore gon City jitney is announced by a sign which bears the name of the city in large letters and goes on to say that the car travels the Oregon City road to West Linn. Arriving at West Linn drivers instruct their passengers to remain in the car for a free ride across the bridge, unless the proba bility of apprehension by the authori ties appears to be too great. Mean while jitney Bigns are removed and the free ride lands satisfied passen gers at this- end of the bridge. In addition to the signs to call at tention to the jitney service it is Baid that the drivers personally solicit trade on the streets of the city, and send their passengers to the' opposite end of the suspension bridge where the machine awaits. In concluding the president voiced a warning that the honor and integrity of the United States cannot be tampered with. He prayed that the country should not be drawn into war, but declared that if it should be "in the great voice of National enthusiasm which would be raised, all the world would stand once more thrilled to hear the voice of the new world asserting the standards of justice and liberty." . The president expressed confidence that in time of trouble the great mass of foreign-born citizens of the United States would be loyal. "I never had the slightest doubt of what would happen when America caled upon those of her citizens born in other countries to come to the sup port of the flag," he said. "Why, they will come with cheers, they will come with a momentum which will make us realize that America has once more been cried awake out of every sort of distemper and dream and distraction, and that any man who dares tamper with the spirit of America will be cast out of the confidence of a great Nation upon the instant." MRS. WELLS ACQUITTED Aged Oswego Woman Thanks Each Juror for the Verdict Just a few minutes less than three hours of deliberation were required by a jury in the case of the State of Oregon versus Mrs, Marcy C. Wells, to acquit the elderly Oswego woman of the charge of defrauding an insur ance company through the firing of her houses at Oswego some time ago. The case went to the jury in Judge Campbell's court late Friday after noon and returned with its verdict of acquittal just before seven o'clock. Disregarding the testimony of W. H. Newman, who stated that he had been employed to burn the houses owned by Mrs. Wells, and that he was to receive $225 for the job, and the testimony of Mrs. Carrie Bickner, who said she had heard Mrs. Wells make such an agreement with Newman, the jury brought in a mild surprise to the large number interested in the case when it acquitted the defendant. District Attorney G. L. Hedges and his deputy, Thomas Burke, pros ecuted the case and the defense was represented by Walter A. Dimick, Judge Grant B. Dimick and W. Y. Masters, a Portland barrister. The action required practically five days, having started in Judge Campbell's court on Monday morning of last week. As the verdict was announced Mrs. Wells, seventy years of age, showed great relief and hurried to grasp the hand of each of the jurors, as well as Judge Campbell. The state had a particularly strong case and this was bolstered by the introduction of a mass of conflicting evidence. The Courier $1.00 per year.
