HERE IS A PICTURE SHOWING PARTS OF THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENT LAID ON THE
PACIFIC HIGHWAY IN JACKSON COUNTY BY THE CLARK & HENRY COMPANY. THE WRITER VEN
TURES TO ASSERT THAT THERE ARE MANY CLACKAMAS COUNTY FARMERS THAT WOULD AP
PRECIATE THIS ROAD RUNNING BY THEIR PLACEi
THE Company enjoys the distinction of being pioneers in hard
surface road building in Oregon and there are very few jobs
of importance that they have not figured in. They specialize
in Sheet Asphalt and Bitumenous pavements. The following are
a few of the more important hard surface roads built in Oregon
and California Woodside road, Belmont road, Portolaroad, El
Camino Real road, Bay Shore road, Mariposa road, Folsom road,
Sacramento road, Base Line road, Stockton road, French Camp
and the Medford-Ashland roads.
NO doubt many Clackamas county residents that have toured
through California remember gratefully these delightful and
inviting stretches of hard surface, and the citizens of San Di
ego, San Mateao, Burlingame, San Francisco, San Carlos, Redwood
City, San Rafael, Sausalito, Willets, Yreka, Colusa, Gusalito, Aro
ville, Marysville, Woodland, Richmond, Lodi, Ukiah, Oakland, San
Jose, Medford, Central Point, Roseburg, Eugene, The Dalles,
Springfield, Silverton, Mt. Angel, Salem and many other cities and
towns enjoy the benefits of the street paving done by them. Mr.
Clark personally presides over the Portland offices of the Com
pany and gives personal attention to inquiring correspondence,
specifications and estimates. '
DURING the past year this company has laid a million and a
quarter square yards . of hardsurface pavement. CJackamas
County, the wealthiest in natural resources, is one of the
poorest in good roads it's up to you citizens; what are you going
to do? Everybody knows they need good roads; most everyone
would like good roads; and knows that the hard surface is the best
road, but,' what are you going to do about it?
GOOD ROADS!
WHY and HOW
A GREAT American steel manipulator declares that "In the
education of its people lies the safety of the republic" and is
constantly adding proof of his earnest conviction by erecting
libraries throughout the nation.
THE Clark Henry Construction Company is contribut
ing its mite in a similar endeavor, for, good roads are as ne
cessary as good farms, good stores and good government.
Each is the result of education and each is dependent on the other
JgUT the farmer is most vitally concerned, and he
should be the most consistant as well as the
most constant advocater of good roads, for though
the city is dependent on the farmer it is the farmer
that must haul the produce there, and haul back
the supplies required, and if it takes twice as long
and costs twice as much to do this, all concerned
are needlessly taxed. Modern methods are con-
quoring everywhere. The advent of the automobile, tractor and

the truck have had their influence on the developement of scien

hicles are striving to attain the perfect, like them, the modern
road-buileer has studied, planned and envolved the hard-surface
road which, when laid by a concern who's reputation guar"
antees the work, is the ideal in roads,
