"EXPERTS" NOT LIKED Correspondent Doesn't Think Much of Advice Given Farmers Editor Courier: I do not agree with you in your editorial in last week's Courier under the heading "On Being Penny Wise." I have been noticing some of the reports of Agri cultural Experts and I don't find them at all interesting. For instance, one reports being called to see a sick cow, and advised the owner to get a verter inary. He didn't say how much of a rakeoff he was to have for recom mending that particular cow doctor. In the same report he viewed a field of oats that was being destroyed by grasshoppers, and advised that the oats be cut for hay. . This clodhopper saw that tried sixty years ago and if I remember right the hoppers thank ed the farmers for cutting it down; it saved them the trouble of climbing after it. At least they, got all the oats. Another ' expert reports inspecting clover fields and says: "Fields that were neither pastured nor clipped yielded more seed than those that were." That has not been our ex perience.. We pastured our clover until the fifth of June, then clipped it and turned the cattle off. We had a heavy crop of hay, clean of weeds and briars, and what we left for seed is well filled. 'Another thing, the clover wasn't ready to cut until the June rains were over which this year last ed well into July and that helped in curing the crop. Another writes that the Colorado potato beetle has made its appearance in his county and that he advised the growers to hand pick them and drop them into coal oil. Yea verily: this child worked at that half a century ago, and woe is me if the beetles ever get a foot hold in this valley, and our scientific men can give us no bet ter method of conquering them. The simple minded boy said that he knew the miller had a bunch of fat hogs in his pen, but he didn't know whose grain it was that fattened 'em. So I am aware that" some of the coun ties have evpert advisers, but I don't know of what benefit they are. . .. HUBBARD FARMER. SYLVAN PARK INN, CANNON BEACH, ORE. HOME COOKING UNEQUALLED, SEA FOOD. Where the Heroic Commandor With a Mere Handful of Men as Rear Guard Fell Back, Facing the Foe. Minor Heroes of the Great Conflict. Three towering personalities came to the clinch on the field of Waterloo. There are perhaps a half dozen names remembered In connection with that epoch making battle, but they are little more than names; only Bluecher, Na poleou and Wellington have contrived to outlive the memory of their contem poraries. Yet there were some at Waterloo who were not only brave fighters, but vastly Interesting Individuals, and It Is more than unfortunate that they should have suffered eclipse. There is perhaps one exception. One cannot scratch the his tory surrounding nny of the three great commanders who met at Waterloo with out encountering Michael Key, Napo leon's "bravest of the brave." It Is impossible to think of Ncy ex cept In superlatives. It Is Impossible to collect dry facts about him; the tem per ' that matched his hair smolders through and sets them ablaze. Even Napoleon, always so unpleasantly eager to shift the blame for failure to other shoulders, wrote from the solitude of St Helena, "Ney was the bravest man I ever saw." One of his olDcers once asked him If he ever felt fear. "Never bad time," was the curt reply. The tales of his daring, his halr breudth escapes, his unbelievable In difference to shot and shell, are legion. He was always calmest In time of the greatest peril, and It was this qual ity that Napoleon appreciated. Again and again France and the crown were In Michael Ney's hands. 1 Whenever Napoleon saw that the issue of a bat tle turned on a single point he sent Ney to that point At the battle of Bautzen the emperor lay on the ground which Is sheltered by a height from the town. He heard Ney's guns on the left A bomb burst over his head. He sat down and wrote Marie Louise that the victory was gained. He waited only to learn that Ney was where the crisis turned to be sure of victory. But the most dramatic chapter of this gallant fighter's life is that headed "The Retreat from Moscow." Mels souier might better have painted the rear of the Corslcan's army than the van. He would have had a more ap pealing, 'a more gallant subject in Mi chael Ney, retreating with his face to the enemy. With a mere handful of men ho flung himself between the flee ing French and the Russian army and backed slowly, stubbornly from Mos cow. This is the man who a little later was publicly shot as a traitor to France. Ney's fellow marshal, Grouchy, does not fare so well. Grouchy was a loyal French pntrlot, and ho hud a record of engagement In 200 battles, -which of fered copious proof that he was uo coward. But light headed. Irresolute, vacillating be surety was. The Water loo mistake Is merely a repetition of earlier failures of Judgment. One of the most interesting of the minor heroes of Waterloo was the soldier-musician Graf FrledrlcU WI1 helm Buelow. He had been thrown a little In the shude by the vehement personality of his chief, Bluecher, and the intrepid Gnelsenau. But the man who at the head of his 30,000 emerged at 1 o'clock in the afternoon of June 18, 1S15, from the wood of St. Armand and turned the tide of the battle of Waterloo stands out as a romantic fig ure. Probably no one of Germany's brave fighters of that racking period, excepting not even "Old Forward" himself, was so well loved, so vigor ously admired, as Frledrlch Buelow. He was a gentleman and a man of well seasoned culture. But to find the most truly pictur esque In the group of lesser generals nt Waterloo one must go over to the English side. "As rough, foul mouthed .a devil as ever lived," said Wellington himself of Sir Thomas PIcton. "But" he added, "uo man could do better In the different services assigned to him." He always carried a stick to tap on the horse's mane when he felt over Im patient and wave In the nlr to em phasize his commands. Sometimes he carried an umbrella, as at Vlttorla, where he used It to beat Wellington's butler over the head. The unfortunate man was escorting the headquarters baggage and got In the march of Plc ton's division. The visitor to the field of Waterloo, even though he know little of the per sonality of this flue old fighter, feels a thrill when the guide says, "Here PIcton fell." There could be no sharper contrast to Tom PIcton than Sir Rowland mil. The mild eyed, sweet tempered, ruddy cheeked general, soon to become the most Influential politician In Europe, was the complete picture of an English country gentleman. Chicago Herald. Hii Honesty.
