RUE "boosting" is a fine art. It cannot be defined.
Shouting for a better town, whooping up the locality's
advantages, boasting of resources all these are very
well in their place. But true boosting is more than
this. The real booster is a man who by his acts,
his very life, his accomplishments, does something per
manent for his community. He makes his life and his
career a part of the progress of the place wherein he
lives. Such men are the real boosters, the real leaders in any city or town.
And this being the Booster Day number of the Courier, this paper has tried
to pick the men who have been the true boosters of the county seat, and in a
measure, of the whole county. It has selected these men for what they have
done, or for what their lives as they are now living them, will drive them to
do; and proud of every one, the Courier presents them to the public. There
are other good men in the community many of them, indeed but in the
representative group on this page the Courier feels that it is bringing be
fore the public men of whom their fellow citizens should be proud, men who
have the good of the community at heart; in short, men who truly reflect
in their lives the true booster spirit.
. L. ADAMS
A man who has always stood staunchly in line for all civic betterments
L. Adams, proprietor of "Oregon City's busy store," has for 15 years been
active in the commercial life of the county seat, and by his own efforts has
built up one of the largest stores in the county. Mr. Adams has given
much personal effort to placing Oregon City in the foremost rank of the
state's communities, has been a consistent booster on all occasions, and has
done much to make Oregon City what it is today.
JOHN F. ALBRIGHT
Councilman and fisherman, John P. Albright must be counted in among
the boosters of the community. Taciturn in speech, not much on the "hur
rah stuff,'' Mr. Albright has fought in the council repeatedly for the things
that have made for a better Oregon City. A champion of the pure moun
tain water supply, a leader in the passage of sanitary measures, and a firm
advocate of economy, Mr. Albright has done perhaps more than any other
councilman to serve the best interests of the taxpayers and the city.
GEORGE C. BROWNELL
Noted as a successful jury lawyer and a keen judge of human nature,
George C. Brownell has won his way to fame in the Pacific Northwest by
his own unceasing efforts. While a keen politician, his leadership has been
maintained by the things he has accomplished for the state and for his own
community. An orator of convincing ability, Mr. Brownell has been much
sought after as a speaker and an advocate for big causes, and his record as a
state legislator and as a man, show that he has ever had at heart the bet
terment of those among whom he has lived.
FRANK H., JOHN C, AND EDWARD J. BUSCH
Young in years, but with the real booster spirit bred in their minds,
Frank H., John C. and Edward J. Busch are among the county seat's real
enterprising builders. Associated with Frank Busch in the furniture busi
ness so long and successfully carried on by him in Oregon City, these three
young hustlers will in a short time take over the entire management of the
enterprise and will take their rightful place among the sterling businessmen
of the community. All of them are interested in the civic betterment of the
county seat, and have repeatedly in times past, shown their interest in
public affairs by efforts they have made to bring to a successful conclusion
improvements that have been undertaken by the leading men of Oregon
City. The Busch boys believe in doing things, in having their work re
flect their spirit, and in so conducting their business that it will be of last
ing benefit to the city and to their patrons.
HON. J. U. CAMPBELL
Honored and respected as a jurist of the circuit coui't, the Hon. J. U.
Campbell is truly a leading man in Clackamas county in all that the term
implies. An impartial judge, well versed in law, yet with a warm spot in his
heart for the unfortunate, Judge Campbell is one of the commanding figures
of the bench. As a citizen he has ever been enlisted in the cause of the
majority, and his influence has brought success to many improvements for
the advancement of the community wherein he makes his home.
GRANT B. DIMICK
If Grant B. Dimick had done nothing else than carry on the fight for
the construction of the Willamette Valley Southern railroad, he would have
front rank in the army of true boosters. But not only has he given time,
energy and years of his life to making this local enterprise a success, but
in public life he has served the people in many officical capacities. Always
workng for the best to be had Judge Dimick has proved himself a leader in
many ways. His efforts have included a persistent campaign for the intro
duction of blooded stock on Clackamas County farms and ranches and in
bringing many to see the economy of good foundation stock he has done as
much as almost any one man can do for the community.. Judge Dimick is
one of the county's most able attorneys.
GILBERT L. HEDGES
A man of rare personal attainments and a skillful lawyer as well, Gil
bert L. Hedges belongs in the ranks of the true boosters for what he has done
and for the mariner in which he makes his life true to his ideals. As county
attorney he has filled the office with activity and skill, has won many cases
, for the people as a mass, and has always done what justice demanded. More
cannot be said of any man in public life.
C. G. HUNTLEY
An ardent booster in every sense of the word, C. G. Huntley is so well
Known in Oregon City and the surrounding country that it is idle to attempt
to catalogue his accomplishments. As a legislator he has served the peo
ple well, as a businessman he has made an enviable record, and as a leader
in civic improvement work in the county seat he has ever been in the front
lanks. Owing to his activity in work devoted to the advancement of Ore
gon City he has been made president of the county seat's new marching
club, and as head of that organization he will do his full share to spread
the fame and attractiveness of Oregon City throughout Pacific Slope com
munities. LINN E. JONES
As a skilled pilot of the municipal ship of state, Linn E. Jones, mayor
cf Oregon City, lias proven himself a master hand at the helm. Political
rocks and whirlpools have no terrors for him, and with his eye ever fast
upon the compass of public service, he has made possible continuous and
steady municipal pogress. A foe to hypocrisy, a firm believer in real
economy, and a man of courage, Mayor Jones has the confidence of his
fellow citizens to a flattering degree. Under his administrations Oregon
City has been kept always in the lead in improvements, and much for the
advancement of the city has been accomplished.
JOHN W. LODER
For twenty years a citizen of Oregon City, John W Loder has a record
of which to be proud. A graduate of the law department of Geoge Wash
ington University, at Washington, D. C, and an alumnus of McMinnville
College, Mr. Loder has forged ahead steadily, and stands today one of Oregon
City's "self-made men" worthy of being the example to all. Chosen City
Recorder, he had faithfully performed the duties of this office, and as mu
nicipal judge he has won universal praise for the absolute justice of his
rulings and decisions. ,
B. T. McBAIN
Executive head of one of the largest mills that give Oregon City its
magic payroll, B. T. McBain has found time in spite of his business cares
to prove that he is a real booster and a servant of the public. His per
sonal efforts and influence have been exerted to make successful many
schemes for improving local conditions.. He was one of the first to see the
advantages of the pipe line now being built, and fought for it from the
start. An advocate of good roads, he has steadily done what he could to
bring the country and the city into closer touch, and his support has always
been found ready for any worthy enterprise for the common good.
II. A. RANDS
A civil engineer who likes work for the sake of achievement, H. A.
Rands has been identified with many enterprises that have made the West
the country that it is today. Graduated from Cornell University, Mr. Rands
for a number of years was engaged with the Federal Reclamation Service
work in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and later was on the staff of the
Portland Railway, Light & Power company. His genius is built into many
of the structural improvements of this concern, whose employ he left to
take up the construction of the South Fork Pipe Line that will bring an
abundance of pure water to Oregon City.
CHRISTIAN SCHUEBEL
Busy all the time. When you say that you have said the real thing
about Christian Schuebel, lawyer, city official and foe of all things that are
wrong. A man of tremendous energy, a legislator of renown, and the friend
of his fellow man even if it hurts him Mr. Schuebel is always working for
what he believes to be right. In his own community he is a "dynamo of en
ergy, systematizing what he finds jumbled, and trying ever to clean up
