A right handed man in making a drawing puts his shading from right to left diagonally downward. A left handed man puts his shading from left to right This Is especially no ticeable In the drawings of Leonardo du Vinci, who was left handed. In the same way a right handed man,' being asked to draw a spiral, naturally makes what is called a "left handed" spiral that is, one that curves clock wise, while the left handed man draws the "right handed" spiral, or that which curves counter clock-wise. In his book, "The Curves of Life." fTM. t . -t . . .meuuore Anarea uook says that a Sherlock Holmes could tell from the curves of a carpenter's shavings whether he was right or left handed. as a right handed carpenter Invariably drives his plane a little to the left producing right handed screws, while the left handed carpenter pushes his plane a little to the right and produces left handed screws. Screws and corkscrews are right hand screws unless made for some special purpose. Left hand screws can be bought from any large hard ware dealer. Coflln screws for some unexplained reason are always left hand screws. Man Is naturally right hnnded, and it has been suggested that this may be owing to the position of his heart on the left side. So all tools and weapons have been adapted to right handed men. This Is true of the adze, plane, scythe, gimlet, auger, scissors, snuffers, shears, etc. The strongly left handed man will continue to use Buch tools with his left hand, even though with incon venience, but he in whom the left handedness Is not a strong bias be comes ambidextrous through the use of the right handed contrivances and appliances of everyday life. What is the matter, then with the Ameri can flag? Men who sav nothing when they see that red flag and hear men denouncing the American flag will shove a cartridge home with satisfaction when the revolution comes that the red flaggers are talk ing about all the time. It will ex cuse the butchery and slaughter of tens of thousands, if ever that red flag starts out to conquer the Amer ican flag. We have law and order and lawful ways of doing things un der the American flag, and if men are too ignorant, selfish, blind and foolish to use their ballots for them selves they will never get anywhere by swapping flags. mi. - a . ... j. ne American nag waves over some unjust things, and some rotten things, and some foolish things; but what a contrast over in Europe! The representa tion of ALL parties in proportion to strengthen abolishes MINORITY rule, which is the bane of our state legislatures. New Zealand is likely to adopt some scheme whereby the whole people will be represented in her legislature. The question of pro portional representation is one of the main issues in Australia. The Victorial falls of the Zambesi, in South Central Africa, are capable of furnishing 35,000,000 horse power of electrical energy. An electric light is now made small enough to be attached to the ordinary dry battery cell. It will give a strong beam of light for several hours. Last year, according to the census taker, the total output of the 5521 central electric stations in this coun try was 14,000,000,000 kilowatt-hours of current. An enterprising ranchman at Bis marck, N. D., having in his ranch an artesian well delivering water at a pressure of 70 lb. per sq. in., is util izing the water therefrom to run an electric plant to supply energy for his own purposes. A student of Des Moines has made a tiny electric motor which is hardly half as large as a copper cent. It is a little over a quarter of an inch high and weighs 20 grains. It is thought to be the smallest electric motor in the world. Badger, running down the chimney and shocking Miss Ethel Courdon, of Portland, who was visit ing at the Badger ranch at the time. Just before striking the house the bolt split, apparently, and part of it leaped to the barn, where a nine months old registered Jersey calf was shocked and paralyzed. The storm that ranged over the region was of unusual severity, and aside from the two points on the Badger ranch that were hit, a number of bolts struck in the neighborhood. No serious damage was done, however. Presidential Cheeses. The first monster cheese presented to a president of which we can find rec ord is that offered with great publicity to Jefferson in 1802. The cheese was made one might almost say built In Cheshire, Mass., in a press giving It the great dimensions of four feet diam eter and eighteen inches high. After being successfully pressed it was drawn from Cheshire to Washington in a six horse dray amid popular re joicing. With regard for the dignity of his office, the president insisted on footing the bill to the tune of $200. There is record of an even greater cheese presented to President Jackson, ami President Vau Huren received a great cheese every year of his incum- bucy. With him the custom seems to have ended.
