"A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another." So spake Christ in the days when the consciousness of the brotherhood of man was possessed by but a few per sons. ! We have nowadays another new1 commandment, that we trust one an other. We have come to a realization of the fact that, most men when they pass their words intend to abide by them. Gradually the world is discarding the old, cumbrous, outworn formulas by which men and women asseverat ed, with solemn repetition, their In tentions to tell "the truth, the whole truth and. nothing but the truth." The simple giving of the word is enough. -Men and women trust one another. Especially Is this true In the treat ment of offenders against society. In former decades the idea that one could rely on the word of a convict would have seemed fantastic, ridiculous. The prisoner was a wild beast, to be treated as such, locked up In a case and not on any account to be trust ed. Only after a long course of good conduct could he come to be regard ed as a "trusty" and be charged with the commission of favored work In the prison, always, of course, underthe watchful eye of an armed keeper. Nowadays this Is changed. The of fender against the laws, unless there be reason for suspecting him of Inten tion to commit further crimes, Is treat ed like a man. His word Is taken. And the results are good. An advocate of the newer, better, more enlightened system says: ,, ' "All the new honor prisons demon strate that the old fashioned equip ment of steel for prisons is a needless expense. The convict's promise not to run away Is more effective than steel bnrs." - Not long ago some convicts were working at rondmaklng in Colorado. . They were trusted by the state and were miles awny from any keeper. The thought of running away, of "go ing back on their words," never enter ed their minds. A stranger came tn watch the men at work, and he laid his coat by the side of the road. From the pocket protruded a wallet, evi dently well tilled. It was as safe as though in a safety deposit vnult. One of the convicts picked up the coat and handed It to bis foreman, saying: "Here, take care of this eont. Some crook might come along and steal it." He was on his honor, you see. So are we all on our honor, to do right In the best light of our consciences. Collier's The . National ' Weekly First Time in Clubs Until this year Collier' t has been soldat$5.50.
