THE GREAT COST OF

Macadem Must Be Constantly Watch

At the recent rond congress S. Percy

us superintendent of IiIk'Iiwii.vs In New
York and New Hampshire, declared
that the coxt of maintaining all varie
ties of improve( roads Is about .he
same If the interest on the Investment
Is co nn led. He thinks that the greater
cost of building a brick rotid makes an
Interest charge equivalent to the cost
of maintaining a macudam rond.
All this may be true, but one fact re
mnlns In favor of the brick rood It
will be maintained by not wearing out,
whereas the macadam road is likely to
wenr out by not being maintained. A
constant bill for maintenance is harder
to pay. It appears, than a bill for Inter
est on money invested. If It will be
maintained there is no objection to any
form of good road, but maintenance
seems to be a doubtful thing, and the
way to hnve a good rond Is to get it tn
Its most nearly permanent form nt the
start. The money spent on many mac
adam roads hits been practically thrown
away for luck of their proper mainte
nance. The money spent on brick roads
Is Htlll paying dividends In good serv

build brick roads in our present uncer
tain and growing Htnge of road work.

PLANT FRUIT TREES
IN ;THE SCHOOL YARD.
A Teacher Who Tried It Tall of Her
Great Suooess.
Agriculture Is now being taught in
many rurul bcIiooIh, gad great stress
is belug laid on tbe school garden.
From practical experience as a teach
er I Bud that fruit trees planted on
tbe school . ground prove fur more
profitable and Interesting, says a writ
er In the American Agriculturist The
school usually closes tn June, when
the gurden Is making its greatest
struggle against ' weeds. Very few
children can tend to the school gar
den during tbe summer months, and
when the fall term opens tbe garden
Is overrun with weeds and presents
a very dlscourugiug appearance. Of
ten In the spring passing animals
emme great damuge in tbe garden, and
little profit can be made.
By tbe growing of fruit trees prac
tical lessons may be given on plant
ing, pruning, fertilizing, spraying;
gathering, packing and marketing the
fruit Tbe work can be done during
the school terms. In tbe winter out
door work proves very Interesting, and
tbe pruning of trees can be studied by
pupils bringing shears and doing the
work uuder the guidance of the teach
er. The formation and development
of buds, leaves and fruit can be watch
ed until tbe fruit Is well developed.
Bprnylng ran be done In both winter
and spring, and In tbe fall tbe gather
ing and marketing can be done.
The Brst year I bad fruit trees on
tbe school plot tbe pupils cleared fS
from the sale of the fruit and applied
tbe money to Improving tbe school
building. Great interest can be arous
ed In a school when practical results
can be obtained. The gnrden calls for
much more labor and'ls discouraging
for both teacher and pupil.
In place of the shade trees usually
selected the fruit trees will prove as
attractive and fur more profitable both
financially and morally, for every
child will enjoy school better If he can
carry bis dinner outside and gather
cherries or large, sweet apples to add
to It You who have known this real
ize the affection felt for the old fa
vorite tree.
Methodist Minister Recommends
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy
Huv, James A. Lewis, Milaca,
Minn., wrilos: "Chamberlain's
Cough Ilemody has been a needed
and welcome guest in our home
for a number of years. I highly
recommend it to my fellows as
being a medicine worthy of trial
in cases of colds, roughs and
croup." Give Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy a trial and we are
confident you will find it very ef
fectual and continue to use it as
occasion requires for years to
come, as many others have done.
