ODAY'S study relates to a sub
ject which has thrilled the civi
lized world for centuries a
subject which shall to all eter
nity be a theme of angels and men.
The birth of Jesus must be considered
from the standpoint of a Qlft of Love
Divine. The world was under sentence
of death.- God had pitied humanity
from the first, and had purposely ar
ranged so that It would require the
death of a perfect man to redeem
Adam and the race which lost life In
him. God knew from the beginning
that no such man could be found, be
cause all men were of Adamic stock
aud had a share In
imperfection and
condemnation. The
Divine Plun con
templated that the
Only Begotten of
the Father, the ac
tive agent of Di
vinity In the work
of Creation, should
be granted the
great privilege of
being man's Re
deemer and there
"Bt Kho wat rich
or our taket it
cam poor."
by securing a great reward the Divine
nature, through a resurrection from the
deud.
The First Step of Redemption.
. The primary step In man's recovery
necessarily was that the Logos should
be made flesh and dwell amongst us
and taste death, by the grace of God,
for every man (John I, 14; Hebrews
11, 9.) It Is this first step that we' cele
brate at this season of the year the
birth of Jesus. "lie who was rich, for
our sokes became poor, that we through
Ills poverty might be" reclaimed.
Today's study points out that those
Jews who were then supposed to be
In greatest darkness would see the
great Light of Divine Truth, as rep
resented In Jesus and His ministry.
This hud a primary fulfilment In Gall
lee, where the major portion of Uie
mighty works of Jesus were perform
ed. But Its real fulfilment lies In the
future, when the great "Sun of Right
eousness shall arise with healing in its
beams." Before that glorious Sun, sor
row and sighing will flee away; Ignor
ance aud superstition will vanish; sin
and darkness will be no more. Jesus
Is the great Center of that Sun of
Righteousness, but as He poluts out,
the Bride class, In process of selection
during this Age, is to sit with Him In
Ells Throue; they will shine forth with
the Bridegroom to heal earth's sor
rows ond scutter earth's night tMat
thew xlli, 43.1 All tills will come be
cause "unto im a Child is borni unto us
a Sou is given;" because "the Govern
ment shall rest upon His shoulders;"
because "His name shall be called
Wouderful, Counselor, the Mighty,
Mighty One. the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace."
The Fall of Babylon.
We are to understand Verses 8 to 5
as referrlug. not to Naturu! Israel, but
to Spiritual Israel nominal. The holy
nation has phenomenally Increased
without Increasing the Joy. There are
many false children In the nominal
family of God; there are many "tares"
In the wheat-field." But In the Flurvest
time of this Age there will be a Joy;
the faithful "will rejoice as they that
divide the siioll." The burdensome
yoke of the creednl superstitions will
be broken, and the rod of the oppres
sor. Satan, will be broken. Verse 8 In
timates the fall of Babylon, and the
breaking of the yoke and the rod In
the great "time f trouble."
First of all. our Lord's revelation to
the world will be as the Wonderful
One. lie will be revealed to mankind
"in flaming fire" In the time of trouble,
and subsequently in the rescue work
of Ills Millennial Kingdom.
lie will be the world's' Counselor, to

HUNTING
ASTILL
By KATHLEEN . M'CURDY
it was lu Uie (lay of Illicit distilling
In Kentucky. A man riding ulong a
road lu the eastern -part of Unit state,
reaching a Hiing farmhouse, drew rein.
"I'm looking for a farm to buy," be
sold. "Do you happen to know nf an;
good bit of land about bere wltb some
buildings ou It?"
"No; I don't," said the woman, wbo
was both young and comely.
"There ought to lie Rood farming
about here."
"Strauger," said the woman, "you
hain't looking for farms. You're a rev
enue man after stills."
Tbe man was astonished. lie had
supposed he was playing a very suc
cessful game.- ;
.; "If you'd root out the stills the peo
ple about bere would go to farming
Instead of making whisky."
"I can't root-out the stills." replied
the man, "unless you people help me."
"What kind o' help do you want?"
"Information."
"Well, come Id and have a snack.
Perhaps my buslmnd'll be coming
along aoon, and be may do something
for you."
Tbe revenue man dismounted, led his
horse to the stable In tbe rear and en
tered tbe bouse, fie chatted with tbe
woman freely about the Illicit distill
ing, said that It helped the few and
wronged the many. A district whers
It was notorious never prospered. It
was under a ban; no credit; no pro
duction of crops; no comfort for any
one. She appeared to agree with him
and when be bad finished said:
"Did you ever hear of Joe Com
stock's still?"
"No, I'm a new man; just put on to
thlsr district."
"That's the only one we could get
you on to here. If my husband don't
come borne purty soon I'll tell you all
about It."
Her husband didn't come home. She
said she supposed he bad been de
layed. So after supper she said she
would tell him where the Comstock
still WOB. and If he liked he could go
and clean It out. It was the only one
left In that immediate vicinity and
most nf the people thereabout would
be glad to see It shut up. Tbe wom
an after she bad cleaned away the
supper dishes sat down beside the
stranger and on a piece of paper drew
a diagram of tbe route to Comstock's.
It was rather a zigzag course, extend
ing over several miles. The stranger
asked If there was no more direct
route, and she told him that there was
none that could be mnde plain to one
wbo wns not familiar with tbe coun
try. When It whs dark he got out
bis horse, mounted anil, thanking the
woman for her "hospitality, was about
to ride away when she asked:

"You're a plucky one."
The man rode away, following th
route exactly as It had been laid down
by tbe woman. Be was most of tha
time climbing a mountain aide, and,
though the distance was but a few
miles, he was two hours getting to a
point Just beyond which be had been
told he would find the Comstock stllL
Ha was to recognize It by the crossing
of two mountain roads, a peculiarly
shaped oak tree on the point of one of
the angles. From the crossroads be
was to pasa through an opening be
tween tbe trees, go over a stone wall,
follow a tunnel a short distance down
the mountain and be would coma upon
tha still. Leaving the crossroads, he
moved on aa directed.
He waa moving very quietly down
the stream when be dislodged a stone
that betrayed his approach. He paused,
but, bearing nothing, moved forward
again. Suddenly be beard tbe words
come out of tbe darkness, "Hands upP
He knew that be waa on an elevation
that showed the aky line beyond him
and that doubtless bla enemy could see
him, while he could not see bla enemy.
He held bis revolver In his band cock
ed and, hoping to at least disconcert
hla opponent, fired Into the darkness.
The only response waa a bitter laugh.
It sounded like tbat of a woman eras
ed. Then came a voice which sounded
distinctly feminine:
"Drop your weapon. I can kill yoo
If 1 llkel"
The revenue man hesitated a mo
ment, then thought It best to do as be
bad been bidden. Suddenly a bullseys
lantern waa flashed In bis face.
"You're not tbe coward the other one
was to come bore and surround th
place and kill my Joe. You're a brave
one if you are a revenue. I'm Miss Joe
Comstock, the woman who sent yon
here. I knew you were a revenue
right off. and since I've been wishing
for a f nance to get even with you gov
ernment men I gave you a roundabout
way, coming myself straight up tbe
mountains. I Intended to kill you. but
I couldn't You're too plucky."
"Well, then, since there Is to be no
killing, suppose we shake hands and
say no more about It"
"You go your way aud I go mine.
Good night."
Tbe next afternoon the stranger
again rode up to the Widow Comstock's
bouse and after a long Interview per
suaded her to give up a still that aba
bad been running ever since her hus
band bad been killed. There waa some
thing persuasive In bis makeup, some
thing tbat took hold of the widow's
better side, and Instead of bunting
stills be bunted for her heart. He cap
tured It in time, and they are now
well to do farmers.
