WOODROW WILSON
The Courier believing that
many of its readers would like to
know a little of the life of Wood
row Wilson, herewith presents a
short article, extracted from the
Story of His Life by William Bay.
ard Hale:
Woodrow Wilson was born in
1856, during Christmas week, in
Stauton, which lies in tho beauti
ful Shenandoah valley. Wilson s
grandfather, James Wilson, was
born in Ireland, wnence he em-.
igrated, landing in Philadelphia,
where he was engaged as a print
er. Later he became owner of sev
eral Democratic publications.
Joseph R. Wilson, Wilson's
father began life as a teacher,
first in an academy, then in Jef
ferson College, then in Hampton-
Sidney College. He soon entered
the Presbyterian ministery. When
Woodrow was only two years old,
his father was called to Augusta,
Georgia, and remained at that
place during the war. woodrow
was too young nowover 10 iiuvo
any distinct recollection of the
war, hoing only nine years old
when the war ended. Woodrow
was like tho average boy of his
age, delighted to take part in tho
games, though he was a compan
ion of his father, and listened to
his father road to him by the
hour. When he was seventeen
years of age, ho entered David
son College. He has not over in
vested in the games of the day,
baseball, and "shinny," though he
played baseball with the college
nine for some time. Later he en
tered Princeton and prepared for
his life's battle. Ho was consider,
ed a great debator. The big prize
for debates was the annual Lyndo
Debate. It was generally conceded
that Wilson would carry away tho
first prize. A preliminary contest
was held and on tho evening of
this contest the subject was an
nounced to bo "Protection vs.
Free Trade." Then the debators
took sides by lot. Wilson drew a
slip from tho hat that required
him to argue in favor of Protect
ion. He tore the slip lo nieces and
returned to his scat. Nothing un
der heaven, he swore would in
duce him to argue for something
that he did not believe in. So the
Lynde Prizo went to someone
else.
After graduation from Prince
ton, he entered the Univerwly of
Virginia, the great university or
ganized by Thomas Jefferson.
Here he spent a year studying
law. He was active in sports
here and joined the glee club, or
ganized a debating society, won
the writers and orator's prize.
Wilson selected Atlanta as a
promising city to practice law
and so found a young attorney
and formed a partnership and
waited for clients, who never
came. Atlanta was well supplied
with lawyers, whom the peoplo of
the city knew. In N10 autumn of
1883, Wilson gave up the idea to
practice law, and decidod he
would master the science of pol
itics. He entered the John Hop
kins University and took up tho
work in history and political ec
onomy. The two years spent
there were very valuable to Wil
son, as he studied with a group of
men, every one who has sinco at-
tained a high distinction in the
world's political scholarship,
