OREGON CITY COURIER, FRIDAY, JULY 19, 1912
A Student of
Foreign Customs
By CAROLINE CLEAVER
Ned Collins when lie waa twenty-one
came into a fortune. He laid out the
life before him methodically, resolving
that be would see the world, then mar
ry on a principle of common sense.
It was midsummer when be passed
Into Siberia, and since be bad always
beard tile territory spoken of as bitter
ly cold be was quite surprised to find
It very tolerable. A part of bis plan
was to stop over somewhere In the
lnterler and observe the customs of the
country, of which be bad beard a great
deal. Bringing up one evening In a
small village the surroundings of wbicb
were attractive, be determined to make
that his point of observation.
He spoke some French and some Ger
man, but knew not a word of Russian.
The keeper of tbe little inn at which
be put up was a German who bad mar
ried a Russian woman. He was a stu
pid looking man, sitting all day drink
ing vodka since be could not get beer
and smoking bis pipe, bis wife, who
was an energetic body, doing all tbe
work. Sbe was comely, having tbe
fair, delicate complexion of tbe north,
and ber daughter, Anna, aged sixteen,
was a beauty.
Collins was very proud of bis knowl
edge of tbe German language and anx
ious to perfect bimself in it before
reaching Germany, wbcre be expected
to sojourn for some time. Therefore
be concluded to practice on tbe land
lord and bis family, though the wife
and daughter spoke it indifferently,
Ned began on Scbmltt, tbe landlord;
asked blm all manner of questions
about the country and the people, ex
plaining that be was there for tbe pur
poses of observation. He also told
mine host that If any of those strange
ceremonies of which he bad beard were
practiced during bis stay be would be
glad to witness them.
Tbe landlord said "Jahl" and went
on smoking bis pipe, not manifesting
any Interest In the subject. He was a
good man to practice on, for be spoke
only In monosyllables, wbicb permit
ted tbe practlcer to do all tbe talking.
But as soon as Ned caugbt sight of
Anna be transferred bis practice to
her. '
How ho expected to learn Ger
man from a Russian girl who bad
picked up only a few sentences from
her father does not appear. Nor 1b it
certain whether he made practice an
excuse for making love to the girl,
whose eyes and hair and skin were
all delicately fair, or whether be real
ly thought be was gaining a ' knowl
edge of German that would be useful
to blm among tbe aristocrats of Rerlin.
Be this as It may, be spent quite a
while In the village, most of the time
with Anna. Probably be did not real
ize that be was making love. Young
men of twenty-one can make love as
fast as a horse can trot without Intend
ing anything serious.
However, Collins, who bad formed a
resolution that be wouldn't marry be
fore he was thirty and then on com
mon sense principles which meant at
least that tbe girl should be one of his
own class after spending a month In
the place studying the customs of tbe
country, through Anno, one day called
for his bill, saying that be thought be I
would depart next day.
The landlord looked at blm through
a pair of little eyes bidden under a
pair of bushy eyebrows and said that
one of those peculiar Siberian cere'
monies be had beard of would take
place tbe next day and If be would
stop over be could witness it Collins
asked what kind of ceremony It was,
but tbe landlord was not a good band
at explaining things. . He only said
that there would be a foot race, but
the Issue of the race meant a great
deal for the winner. Collins, having
spent a great deal of time waiting to
te somothlng of tbe kind, concluded
to delay his departure.
Tbe next morning tbe landlord of
fered to conduct him to the place
where tbe ceremony was to take place.
A tent was pitched on level ground,
and before it Collins saw a bevy of
young girls. Just before be reached
them Anna left them, looking at Col
lins as If she wished blm to follow her.
He did so and Just as be was about to
Join her she laughed and sturted to
run.
Now, Ned had won prizes at tbe ath
letic games in America and consider
ing this a challenge gave chase. Anna,
however, was very good at a short
distance run, and Ned was entirely out
of training. She led him about over
the field for awhile, the lookers-on
shouting and clapping their hands till
at IttHt she began to lag, and when he
caught her she fell Into bis anus quite
limp.
Ned supported her to the tent, where
a priest stepped out from the crowd
and until sQtiii'thlntrk tijnt Ned didn't
unacrsiuna. men me party went to
the hotel, where a breakfast had been
let out.
When Ned was told tbe meaning of
III this be learned that he bad been
married to Anna. In Slberlu at wed
dings the bride runs from the groom
and he must catch her before be can
marry ber. Tbe landlord bad been too
smart for the American and secured a
husband for bis daughter. Ned might
have bought bis way out of the trap,
but he bad really fallen In love with
the girl and decided to take ber away
wltb blm, educate ber and bare an
other marriage ceremony performed, at ,
which he would know what be was
doing and the legality of which could
not be questioned.
Th. Rainy Day.
Tbe day Is cold and dark and dreary.
It ralna, and the wind Is never weary.
The vine still clings to the molderlng wall,
But at every gust the dead leavea (all.
And the day la dark and dreary.
My life Is cold and dark and dreary.
It ralna, and the wind la never weary.
My thoughts still cling to the molderlng
past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick In the
blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.
Be still, sad heart, and cease repining.
Behind the clouds la the sun atlll shining.
Tliy (ate Is the common (ate of all
Into each life some ruin muat (all,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

A rather turgid orator, noted for hla
verbosity and heaviness, was once as
signed to do some campaigning In a
mlDlng camp In tbe mountains. Tbere
were about fifty miners present wben
be began. But when, at tbe end of a
couple of bours, be gave no sign of
finishing, his listeners dropped away.
Borne went back to work, but the ma
jority sought places to quench their"
thirst, which had been aggravated by
tbe dryness of tbe discourse.
Finally tbere was only one auditor
left, a dilapidated, weary looking old
fellow. Fixing bis gaze on blm, the
orator pulled out a large six shooter
and laid It on the table. Tbe old fellow
fose slowly and drawled out:
"Be you goln' to shoot If I go?"
"You bet I am," replied the speaker.
"I'm bound to finish my speech, even
If 1 bave to shoot to keep an audi

Tbe old fellow sighed In a tired man
ner and edged slowly away, saying as
be did so:
